Heather and Timothy O'Neill are young and wealthy. The first disruption in their happy marriage occurs when one of their venture-capital company's investments is acquired in what proves to be a fraudulent merger. Heather and Tim initiate a lawsuit against the acquiring company which is headed by Adam Steinberg, a sinister, billionaire-financier who is devoted to insatiable, unjustifiable greed. In retaliation, Steinberg organizes repeated attacks on the O'Neills' property, their associates, and ultimately, them personally. As they struggle to counter and survive Steinberg's plots against them, the young couple is then exposed to the evil man's principal business activity and source of wealth. Steinberg and his Club of "Shortists" make plans to drive down the stock market price of another of the O'Neills' venture investments. The Club members will employ their customary corrupt practices with the expectation of generating immense gains for themselves from their shorting activities. The classic struggle of good versus evil played out in the securities market makes entertaining and educational reading.
