Overview

Two souls with the same dream;
two wounded hearts fiercely protected.
Falling in love surprised them;
neither anticipated what love would teach them…

Unless A Love Be Free is not the usual set-in-England-man-of-noble-birth-meets-spunky-rags-to-riches-heroine story. It is the tale of two people, prisoners of their pasts, who share a dream of freedom. When they meet, each believes freedom is to be found elsewhere, somewhere other than where they are.

McKenzie Campbell has vowed never to love again. Widowed from an abusive husband, she tries not to remember what she once believed about love, the warmth of a man’s arms around her or the passion in his kiss.

Garrick Stuart has a reputation of cunning and ruthless disregard for the law. Arriving on George Island as a shackled prisoner, Garrick believes all is lost. George Island has a reputation as well. No one has ever escaped. It is here he will live out the consequences of a reputation that far outweighs his crimes.

A momentary encounter with McKenzie shakes the darkness from his soul. He cannot, will not, give up his freedom without a fight. When the moment presents itself, he risks it all to make one last bid for escape.

As their stories unwind and combine, as curiosity leads to a fragile bond of trust, both begin to understand that what they seek is within them, built on a foundation of self-acceptance and honesty, nurtured by love. Their odyssey begins in the confines of an island prison and climaxes on the vast reaches of the open sea, a metaphor for the journey of their hearts.

About the Author

Deep in the family vault, there is an 8mm, silent home movie of a six-year-old Jerilyn standing on an ottoman “giving a speech”. Talk about foreshadowing!

Flash forward ten years to a high school drama class production of “Shootout at Okey-Dokey Corral”, penned by a teen Jerilyn who quickly discovered that writing the words was just as much fun as saying them.

Twenty years later, captivated by the wit and adventure she found in Kathleen Woodiwiss novels and the dark heroes of Laura Kincade, Jerilyn decided to try her hand at writing book length fiction. She quickly discovered just how hard it is to write a wonderful story. But it was too late, she had been bitten (smitten) by the writing bug. She joined Romance Writers of America in 1996 and began to “seriously” write fiction.

Ironically, her first published book, Deep, Deeper, Deeper Still, co-authored with Wendy M. Warden is a work of non-fiction. “Deeper Still” is a guided journaling experience designed to help people who journal (and those who wish to start) move beyond the obvious and into the richness of their life hidden below the surface. It was published by Xlibris in 2009.

Unless a Love Be Free is Jerilyn’s debut novel. It has twice been a finalist in the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart contest as well winning in the Historical fiction category in other national fiction writing contests. She hopes you are swept away by the story of McKenzie and Garrick.

And what of the little girl on the ottoman?

While she no longer stands on an ottoman, Jerilyn is a professional speaker and has presented to organizations such as the American Management Association, Chicago Industrial/Organizational Psychologists, Food Executive Women, Windy City RWA, and the Midwest Society of Professional Consultants among others.

Transitioning from a career as a psychotherapist, she followed the call of her entrepreneurial spirit and formed JWillin Consulting, Ltd. in 1996. In her practice, Jerilyn helps people look forward to going to work. How? By working with organizations that seek to help their employees bring their best to the job through leadership development, team effectiveness and performance coaching. She also coaches individuals wishing to achieve personal career goals.
