Unless You Bless Me by Maryam Kirschbaum
The story of Jabez continue to fascinate us to this day. It is based on two lines in the enormous words of the Holy Bible in an unlikely place. "Jabez was more honorable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, "because I bare him with sorrow." As Jabez was able to understand his environment and his circumstances, he did the best and the right thing. This is what the Bible told us: "And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested."
What Jabez did here was to take God up on His words. This is the classic example of, "I will not let you go unless you bless me." God that answered Jabez has not changed. His position remains formidable from that time to this very moment. He is the God of the Living, the Powerful One, the "I AM THAT I AM," that is, His Name forever, a memoriam to all generations. We are on a spiritual journey in life and we are built to overcome. God states: "I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for my own sake; and I will not remember your sins" (Isaiah 43:25). Of what use is our tears and mourning when God has declare: "Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession? Just ask!
