Overview

Unorthodox Practices by Marissa Piesman

Welcome to New York in the 1980s, where 'the best thing about being obsessed with real estate' is that you can count on it to arise in conversation 'about every ten minutes.' Nina Fischman mostly opts out of those conversations: She's too busy running down to Housing Court on behalf of her 'poverty law' clients, and tracking down sales on sweaters that camouflage the hips. But Nina's mother, Ida, has a nose for the market, and that nose gets twitchy when old ladies in her neighborhood start dying, leaving apartments that have miraculously escaped what New Yorkers delicately call 'the cockroach problem.' Someone's making a killing in real estate.

Nina Fischman has papers up to her neck in this unusual story. She is a Housing Court Attorney who is bent on helping people keep their homes. If only she could sort through all the files she has piled up in her office. One day something fishy goes on and it just doesn't sit right with Nina. Mrs. Gross and Mrs. Kahn mysteriously die in their well kept apartment. They were always healthy women, so for them to just die suddenly is quite strange and unusual. Ida, Nina's mother, who knew the two women jumps up on the case and is as determined as Nina is to solve this crime. While Ida looks for clues, Nina tries to convince Judah Lev, an Orthodox Prosecutor, that Mrs. gross and Mrs. Kahn were murdered. Nina also has other problems on her hands. She is trying to figure out if she wants to marry or leave her long time boyfriend,Grant. The decision gets even harder when she begins to develop feelings for Judah Lev. 'I'm really in the growth industry, Nina thought as she divided her phone messages into four separate piles. Now if only I could force myself to call any of these people back' This is an example of how Nina feels about her clients and her work. She is a very big procrastinator.
