Overview

Until Alex by J. Nathan

On the outside, Hayden is every girl's living breathing fantasy, brooding and devastatingly gorgeous. And while he spends his nights losing himself in alcohol and faceless girls, it's all just a facade. An elaborate cover for the emotionless shell of a man he is. One who harbors too many secrets and destroys lives the way his was destroyed. It's the reason he avoids relationships and keeps everyone at arm's length...

Until Alex

Alex's life just shattered into a million pieces, leaving her with more grief than she knows what to do with and guilt so deep it's destroyed the carefree girl she once was. Now she's hundreds of miles from home, living with an aunt she doesn't know, finishing senior year at a college she's never been to, and trying desperately to get through a single day without breaking down. She's never felt more alone in her life...

Until Hayden

The trouble with Hayden is who he wants to be and who he is are in constant flux. And though he'd die before letting Alex learn the truth about him, he can't be sure he's strong enough to let her in...or push her away. She's the one person who just might see the real him.

5 Well Deserved Stars This book was so much more than I what I had imagined. It was the typical angsty set up that I tend to love in books: boy with demons, girl with past heartache, lots of sexual tension between them. While the labels apply they do little in explaining how much more this story conveys. I attribute my love of this story to the wonderful writing by Nathan. Literally, the prologue itself blew me away and I was thrilled that the rest of the story affected me the same way. Told in alternating POV's we get the story of Hayden and Alex. Hayden had an abusive past and was witness to horrible events. Shuffled around through the foster system he befriends Remy. Remy and Hayden work as the collection agency for a bookie, if you catch my drift. On top of that lifestyle, he tends to lose himself in booze and women. That was his lifestyle until Alex comes into his life. Hayden is intrigued by this girl who lives across the hall with his landlady. She is sad and looks lost which is something he understands. Once he meets her he realizes she is more. Alex has lost everything and she finds herself starting over, broken and alone. The tears finally stop when she meets Hayden. Aside from his good looks and incredible physique she senses a familiarity in him. He seems to understand her. Not only that, he has become her savior. I loved Hayden and Alex's story because both characters are real, their emotions are raw and they simply are perfect for each other. Alex's sarcasm was refreshing. Though she was developing feelings for Hayden and Hayden continued to screw up she handled it well. She didn't become some whiny heroine. I loved how she stood up for herself but not to the point where she let forgiveness go to the wayside. Hayden had his issues. There were times I wanted to strangle him, but for the most part he was still a decent guy, especially once he started letting Alex in. He wanted to be better for her but his past made it difficult. I loved how he tried but did I mention there were times her made me want to strangle him. Nathan did a wonderful job bringing Hayden and Alex's story to life. I loved how Nathan eased us in to Alex's traumatic past. It didn't wind up being one of those stories where you are like "really, that is all it was" or "omg can all that even happen to one person". Even better, when we get the climax, I truly was on the edge of my seat. It was written so well I was able to experience the emotions and the pain. The best part though is that the Epilogue is the icing on the cake. We get a HEA in this wonderful stand alone book and truly believe it needs to be on everyone's TBR list. Until Alex, J. Nathan Review from jeannie zelos book reviews I enjoy some NA novels, and I liked the sound of this one. Sadly though it didn't live up to the promise. I found it quite slow to start, and the things that had happened and were happening to Alex and Hayden were for me a bit too OTT, too far from reality for a novel thats set in real time, without any backing information or details. The actions seemed suspended from what would/could really happen. I know there's a necessity to keep the reader guessing at whats going on, to keep some information back, but for me this went a little too far. Then there was some of the behaviours of them both...at times it was just too YA for me. That could be just me, after all I'm long past the NA target, despite enjoying many books in this genre, so that needs to be taken into consideration, that younger readers may be able to accept things that I couldn't. I liked the characters, they felt very real but I just struggled with how they behaved some of the time. I was struggling, getting that awful feeling that this was going to be a 2 star review - and I hate doing that, esp to a debut author. I'd hate to put anyone off writing ( and I'm just one person, one reviewer, there'll be lots of five star reviews i'm sure) and then - wham, right on the home stretch J Nathan threw in a real curveball, some very cleverly constructed suspense that made up for so much of the earlier somewhat bland offering...I didn't know who was behind what happened, though after I could see how the seeds had been sown, and it wasn't pulled over quickly but drawn out properly, ends tied up neatly, eveything adding up properly and very satisfyingly, and it added for me another 1.5 stars to the novel! that makes me happy ;-) Stars: 3.5 ARC supplied via Netgalley
