Overview

One spider's search for a home of her own

Each spring hundreds of spiders hatch from their egg sacs and begin their struggle to survive. They must protect themselves not only from predators, but also from their very own siblings!

Ginger Wadsworth and Patricia J. Wynne chronicle the real-life drama of one spider as she eats, grows, spins a dragline of silk, and soars up, up, and away to find a home of her own.

A non-fiction book about garden spiders that reads as effortlessly as fiction. Beautifully illustrated in watercolor, gouache, ink and colored pencil.

Since I have never been a huge fan of critters with more than four legs and have not wanted to pass this aversion on to my children, this was the perfect book to dispel some fears. My 3 year old and 6 year old LOVED this book, despite their not-so-fondness of spiders. The story kept them interested, the illustrations were wonderful and they soaked up a lot of good scientific facts without even realizing it. I can't say spiders will replace dogs, cats and bunnies, but at least the girls don't start screaming and calling for death when they see the once-loathed arachnids! Curiosity has replaced terror, what an accomplishment.

My two-year-old granddaughter loves "Up, Up, and Away"! I cannot read it to her enough times--now she's counting spider legs, says "arachnid" and loves the tiny spiders spilling out of the egg sack into the big world. Beautifully written and illustrated, clear and the exciting--up close and intimate view of a garden spider's life cycle. Kids 2 to about 8 will love this book! (I love it!)
