Since her father died, Kate Sweeting’s home life has been in the pits, her well-being on life support. Her future looks desolate until she and her mother, Cara, make another plan: abandon their shriveled existence for more promising prospects on the coast, where Cara can play small-town librarian-bachelorette and Kate can figure out what’s up with that secretive Blake family from the beach.

Everyone is eerily captivated with Kate and her mother, and Cara is the first to figure out why when the man of her dreams arrives all dripping and devoted and closed-mouthed about what he intends. Kate is willing to go along with their subterfuge for a while, but eventually makes a charge for the water to learn what her mother is hiding. Gabe Blake is there waiting for her…and so is someone considerably less friendly. By the time Kate navigates her way home, everything will have changed for her—what she feels, what she wants, and what she’ll risk to be with the man she loves.

Audio version. There's a lot of set up in this. It took me awhile to get in to it, I'd say it took me about 4 days to get through it. But it does get really good. I can't wait for the next part. This Audiobook was given to me at my request from the publishers, author or narrator and I provided this unbiased voluntary review. Reasons I enjoyed this book: Happily Ever After, Whimsical, Original, Great world building, Unpredictable, Entertaining, Romantic, Wonderful characters, Funny.

[disclaimer: I won this book and it’s successor in an author giveaway. I am voluntarily reviewing it] “What I want”, she thought, “ is a life that feels good, not just one that looks good”. It’s hard to write a review for a book that so touched you, you are bound to leak a spoiler or two. Kate Blake has known Gabe since she and her widowed mother Cara moved to Griffiths Bayso Cara could become a librarian. No one guessed she’d find a second chance at love there, nor how much the small community would allow them both to heal and grow... Not that it would be fraught with unanswered questions and high levels of commitment with bonds so strong they will challenge and change them all. I loved this book. Stevens took the Hans Christian Anderson story of the Little Mermaid and “de-Disneyfied it”, replacing that with a tale that will haunt you. This is one of, if not,the best Mermaid/Siren tale I have ever read. Run, do not walk to read this. 5/5

What a read! There were a lot of details in the book and I am not sure they were all necessary, but wow. This was a great read once you got past a very detailed beginning. The book revolves around a pair of young kids who met when they were 5. There are a lot of secrets that are fairly easy for us as readers to figure out, but not so much for the characters involved. It was a cute romance that developed with a hint of trouble. I really loved reading the story to discover the secrets and when the trouble started, I couldn’t put the book down. I wanted to find out what was going on and how it was going to turn out. Overall, it was a really good book and I look forward to reading book two to see where the story leads us!

What I most enjoyed about this book was not only its stunning prose but the unexpected surprises along the way. It's not a "normal" para-normal romance in that traditional stereotypes have been flipped which I believe only makes the book more interesting to read. I won't spoil the surprises -- I hate it when reviewers do that -- but I will say that they make you rethink the "one man, one woman" paradigm. I too am looking forward to the next book, Ms. Stevens. If it is anything like this one, I'm sure it will offer several fun new surprises -- I can't wait!

Overall I really enjoyed the book. Started off a bit rocky, but as the plot developed it just got better and better. It really felt like something you can relate to. I really look forward to reading the next one.

My Review: 3.5/5 stars (spoiler-free!!) I think in order to properly review this book, I have to do it in sections. I'll start with the plot, which overall I would rate a 3.7?/4. I really liked the way certain events played out, were paced, etc. However, some events felt like they weren't necessary. For example, all of the focus on Dana and Will in the middle of the book. I thought they were going to be part of a key event/turn into main characters after all of the focus on them, but then they weren't brought up again. Overall, the plot was pretty good, I just didn't like some of the, what felt like, pointless events. Next is characters, which I would say were 4/5. I absolutely loved some of the characters, like Gabe, Carmen, Kate, etc. However, I just wish some of them were more developed. Again, the fact that Will and Dana were so developed for no reason really bothered me. But because of the overall pacing of the novel it's understandable why only certain characters were highly developed. Overall, most of the characters were very funny and likable, helping you to build a connection to them. One problem I had with this book was definitely pacing, which I would give a 3.5/5. Especially in the beginning of the novel, almost everything is extremely rushed, years going by within pages. Then towards the end of the novel, I felt as if certain parts were dragged on and on while others were rushed. I just really wished some moments could have been less rushed, especially the events I enjoyed. Lastly, the biggest problem I had with this book was the author's style, which is 2/5 stars for me. Throughout the book, point of views are CONSTANTLY changing, just about every sentence. It makes it so hard to understand what is going on at some points and is just extremely frustrating. I found that this was a problem mainly in the first half of the novel. However, I'm not sure if it became less rapid or if I just got used to it. ALSO, everything was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo heavily described to the point that it was honestly just tedious. Although I did have some problems with this book, I definitely feel like the second half of the book and the entertaining characters really saved it for me. I recommend this novel if you enjoy romance, mermaids, and funny characters. :)

From the opening quote to the teaser for the next book, Updrift had me hooked. A lovely, strong, smart heroine, a dashing hero, a villain with depth and dimension, and a lush and lovely fantasy world. The character of Peter was and will remain one of my literary favorites. I can't wait for the sequel!!!

Updrift hit all the high notes a novel should in my opinion-beautiful writing, evocative setting, and a plot that a kept me guessing and turing the pages. This was a GREAT read.

Updrift was an absolute treat to read! I do not normally read books of this genre, but I am so glad I read this one. From the dynamic characters to the vivid imagery in the prose, I devoured this book. I was able to finish it in one weekend, which was a feat in itself with a busy toddler dictating my days. But the book was engaging and accessible; the combination meant I could not put it down!

This is a great book. I loved it from the first page and quite literally "couldn't set it down". The story line was gripping, characters felt real and the pace was steady and true. I'm all in for the next books in the series.

As I age, it becomes more and more difficult to find that book- you know the kind: the one that causes meals to be served late, clothing to remain unwashed, and life to be put on hold till the last chapter is read. Well, here is one of those books! A great read!

Wow, what a creative approach to romance. I don't typically read in this genre but wanted to review this book before giving it to my 13 year old daughter. And I thought it was terrific. A great story line; thoughtfully drawn characters; and a plot that kept me guessing and engaged. I would recommend this book to anyone and looking forward to the next chapter!

My favorite read of the year, by far. With all the "aliens living among us" fear being generated in the world right now, I found this such a breath of fresh air. These beautiful, breathtaking creatures struggle with the same cultural dilemma that we do in trying to make sense of their unique and fascinating world. The author paints an enticing, sexy landscape that draws us in and immerses us (pun intended) in the intimacies of a surreal population that seeks to not only ensure its existence, but demonstrate for us the true art that is living. Encore!
