Upon A Winter's Night by Pamela Clare

Reunite with the MacKinnon brothers and their wives for Christmas--and a tale of love, new life, and redemption.

The war between Britain and the French is finally at an end, and the MacKinnons are looking forward to celebrating their first peacetime Christmas in five long years. While Iain and Annie have discovered that the pleasures of marriage grow deeper with time, Morgan and Amalie find themselves at bitter odds. Meanwhile, Connor and Sarah have a newborn son to cherish.

The family's preparations for the holidays are interrupted when Iain learns that Britain has not paid the Rangers for the summer's victorious campaigns. Unwilling to let men who fought under the MacKinnon name suffer deprivation at Christmastime, Iain, Morgan, and Connor leave the warmth of their frontier farm for Albany. There, they find their happy Christmas, and even their freedom, at risk at the hands of a ruthless British officer who holds a grudge against them.

With the men gone, Annie, Amalie, and Sarah do their best to prepare for the festivities despite differing traditions, a raging bull--and the gnawing fear that their husbands won't make it home for Yule.

Events begin the day after the epilogue of Defiant ends. The story includes Joseph, Killy--and revelations about the fate of Lord William Wentworth.

I enjoyed hearing more about the MacKinnon's in this novella by Pamela, this book picks up where Defiant leaves off and it was a great touch in this series, giving us readers an update of their lives at Christmas, and bringing all our favorite characters to life, again. The historical romance series, is full of very well researched American, British and French history that is never boring, that evolves around the 3 MacKinnon men and their lovely wives. It will grab your heart, mind and soul and keep you enthralled as you read, and you will be anxious to get to the next book in the series. The characters feel like a part of your family.....upbeat, romantic, thrilling!!! You should read Surrender, Untamed and Defiant prior to this novella, to get the full impact. Kudos to a fantastic author who always gives us the best stories to read!!!

~Reviewed by ANGELA & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog There is no doubt that Ms. Clare is a phenomenal writer. But it’s with her historical novels is where I love her work the most. She can bring history alive and let me experience up close and personal with the characters she had created. Upon a Winter’s Night takes place shortly after Defiant had ended. The MacKinnon brothers are settled in their home with their wives and children. But their work is not done as Rangers. They had set out to help their comrades with issues after the war. I guess we can compare their work to the programs to help our veterans in present time. They are honorable through and through. They are also now dealing with their HEAs (happy-ever-after) with their family as Christmas approaches. Their gifts and expectations from each other humbles me and reminds me of what Christmas really means We get a good amount of Iain and Annie, Morgan and Amalie and especially Connor and Sarah. Connor and Sarah are having marital issues, but no worries, they work things out. Sara is still dealing with the loss of her uncle. Though William Wentworth is still alive, he refuses to show himself to Sarah. While he played the villain in the MacKinnon lives for some time, he had won the hearts of many readers when he proved himself worthy at the end of Defiant. It was a magnificent act of love and bravery. And he will make another decision here that will prove, yet again that he is a good guy. He knows he’s made a mistake and trying to make up for it. We also get a bit of Killy as he gets his HEA, a funny and very sweet story. Joseph is still with the MacKinnons and truly a part of their family. His story is also promised to Ms. Clare’s fans and most likely next up. And after, it will be Wentworth’s story. I can’t wait to get more of this series and I’m hoping they come sooner than later. =)

Oh how I loved this book. I can't say enough about this series. I loved everyone of the books and this one was right up there with the others. It was so great to visit with the characters and I was so glad to see one of my favorite characters find his HEA. I have to say Ms. Clare that you made me cry at the end of the story. I hated Lord William for so much of the series until Defiant. Ugh...there is so much I want to say in this review but it would ruin it for readers. So if you've not read the MacKinnon's Rangers series then I highly recommend you do and start in the beginning so you can truly enjoy them.

Pamela Clare does it again. Upon A Winters Night takes you back to the MacKinnon family. I felt like I was visiting with old friends.  I highly recommend you read the series: Surrender, Untamed & Defiant, then finish with this story. Enjoy :)

/•\ Junglespeed settled down on his haunches, his banner curled tightly over his paws. The Tom's Auds remained slightly angeled back, and his whiskers quivered. "I'd like to start, by revealing my History. It's good to know whom your choosing as Deputy. I'm Junglespeed, 28 Moons, and a Former Deputy of an old Clan. Fallenclan." He shifted slightly. "I was born to Kinkpelt and Greynose, with two Siblings, Alligatorkit, and Bambookit. Both died, due to an attack from Hawks. I was the only one of my Littermate's to survive. I did grieve, but I didn"t let that push it's way between the duties I had begun to start. I became Junglepaw, and my Mentor was a Noble Tom, named Spiderlock. He trained me up...Trained me rather well. I was told to be the fastest runner, for my muscular, yet long legs can carry me furthur than the eye can see. But I wasn't only credited for my unnatural speed, but I was told to be a fierce Fighter, and told to be, the one who wouldn't let the Clan fall..I recieved the name Junglespeed from Spiderlock, whom then became Leader. I was content with the name..but I had only wished my Siblings had been beside me. I even had names for them. Alligatorsnap, and bamboowhisper. Well. Fallenclan ended up destroyed by a hurricane, and I and an Apprentice, Forestpaw, were only survivors. I lived as a Loner, gave Forestpaw the name Forestfighter, and we went our seperate ways. I was not sad, but I wasn't happy. Then, I ended up here." Junglespeed stared low at his paws, shaking his head. "Now, For my Vows and Promises. I, Junglespeed, New Warrior of Stormclan say these words carefully. I solemnly promise to fight forever, till my final breath. I won't let anything stand in the way if my need to protect Stormclan...I...I won't let it be destroyed. Not like Fallenclan was..I was Deputy in Fallenclan, for a while, that's when the hurricane hit..I won't stand around, and watch Ill Literate Roleplayers' come in, with rainbow pelts and death claws. I'll be active, the best I can be. Hencing, I lead two Clans, am Deputy of One, Medicine Cat in another, and then have a succsessful Rp I created last June..But I'll still attempt to be active. I'm not saying I should be Deputy, because I'm not going to have a fit if I'm not picked. I'll be happy to just remain a Warrior, because that's Important, too." Junglespeed licked a paw, blinking. "Anyway..This is my application. These are my promises. Thank you for your time." He ducked his head, padding out. /•\

She cries at the sight of her brother crying in his clan. She also sees her brother's mate, Silverstar, comforting him. At the end of her vision, she sees them happy, twining tails and hunting together. She sighs, wishing she could have a life like that. But she already knew that she never would. Even if she hadn't died. Besides, the battle had ruined her good looks. Was there even ANYONE in Stormclan that had a crush on her, for the least part? She shrugs and simply pads to StarClan, at "heaven star", she had overheard her brother saying.
