I have to say that this is only book #2 that I have not been able to finish through in my lifetime. I am not one to usually quit reading something, but I tried picking it up multiple times to no avail. As to not place disrespect on the author or the book, I will just say that perhaps this book was not "my cup of tea" or didn't "float my boat".
The story behind this novel bode well for an interesting read; a coming of age tale of a young girl struggling to make a living/life for herself in the drought-ridden desert. But somehow it missed the mark for me. The relationship between Fania and Yehiel was frustrating to say the least with their lack of communication becoming increasingly irritating. It also seemed that at each new chapter, time had passed with little evidence of what had happened in between. Maybe this was an editing issue?Where the narrative became political, I lost interest I'm afraid. Too many people coming and going to keep track of. Maybe I read this book with the wrong frame of mind, but I did find it a struggle, hence the 2 stars.
