Veil of Deception by Michael Byars Lewis

What if the company building America's most expensive weapons program was secretly owned by one of our enemies?

Book Three in the Jason Conrad Thriller Series! For years, Air Force Captain Jason Conrad flew and instructed in the supersonic T-38. Despite his decline into a self-destructive lifestyle, he was considered one of the best instructors on the base. Following a terrifying jet crash, Jason finds himself on a very short list of people on their way out the door. It is a surprise to everyone when he is assigned to the home of the U.S. Air Force Flight Test Center. Jason should have known that in a ‘one mistake Air Force’ where you ‘do more with less’, everything would not be what it appears. Attached to a secret project with a shadowy contractor, Jason is caught between two complications; an overbearing, retired general determined to see him fail; and an aggressive television reporter who wants him in prison. When a ghost from the past shows up and a beautiful, yet mysterious woman enters his life, Jason soon discovers his special project has more secrets than anyone knows about . . . and it could cost him his life.

In Veil Of Deception, the second book in the Captain Jason Conrad Series, author Michael Byars Lewis weaves a riveting military thriller that follows the latest adventure of Air Force Captain Jason Conrad. The reader was introduced to Captain Jason Conrad, a jet pilot instructor at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma, in Surly Bonds, the first book in the series. Now in Veil Of Deception, Jason's adventures continues when he is assigned to Edwards Air Force Base in California, the home of the U.S. Air Force Flight Test Center, to assist in the testing of a new top secret Air Force project, the F-2000 fighter jet. But the secret project goes anything but smooth when there are secrets and deception by the contractor, and dangerous espionage from foreign countries who want to take the U.S. down. Author Michael Byars Lewis utilizes his vast experience as an Air Force pilot to weave a gripping and complex military / political thriller that will captivate the reader's attention, and keep them sitting on the edge of their seats. Veil Of Deception is a fast paced multi-layered tale that is masterfully interwoven with international intrigue and espionage; secrets, deception, and hidden agendas; political posturing, plots, and threats; surprising twists and turns; a subtle mysterious romance; and an epic military air-to-air dogfight. The reader follows along as Jason is caught in the middle of a dangerous web of deceit as this realistic story unfolds. This is an exciting and dramatic story that engages the reader to figure out who is hiding behind a veil of deception, it will keep them guessing until all the puzzle pieces are put together, and the explosive truth is unveiled in this dangerous international cat and mouse game. Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author / publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Michael Byars Lewis in his new book, “Veil Of Deception” Book Two in the Captain Jason Conrad series published by SATCOM Publishing gives us another adventure with Captain Jason Conrad. From the back cover: There are no coincidences… When Jason Conrad returned to Vance Air Force Base as a T-38 instructor pilot, he never wanted to leave. For five years, Air Force Captain Jason Conrad flew and instructed in the supersonic T-38. If you look in the Dictionary under, Suspense-Thriller, this novel is listed. Mr. Lewis has given us quite a character with Jason Conrad, he isn’t your typical hero with quite a few rough edges but, I suppose, that is what makes him interesting. Since the plot revolves around a new jet, there is much about flying and most of the plot takes place at Vance Air Force Base. Then there is the interaction with China. There is deception piled upon deception piled upon deception. On top of everything this is quite an engrossing thriller that will have you muttering “oh, no” as you are reading as fast as you can to get to the next page. Don’t start this book late at night as it will cost you sleep as you will not want to put it down. I am already looking forward to the next book in this series. Reviewed by Rabia Tanveer for Readers' Favorite Veil of Deception by Michael Byars Lewis is a thriller that literally everyone will love. While I was reading it, I felt like I was watching a movie in my head. I get a little biased when I read a military novel (or novels related to the armed forces). Whenever I see a military related novel, I just have to pick it up and read it. I love them. But that also means that I expect a lot of these novels. This novel is about Air Force Captain Jason Conrad. The story follows Jason as he tries to come to grips with his lucky survival. There is a huge accident, which very few people survive. As he is considered to be one of the best instructors, he takes the accident pretty hard. When he is reassigned to the U.S. Air Force Flight Test Center, things get a little fishy. There are lies, there is deceit, and Jason is not sure what a “special project” is any more. And it may be enough to get him killed. The story is so good. It has movie quality. The characters are super awesome. Jason is an amazing man. I really loved how he got his act together and, instead of giving in, he simply took charge and worked on making things better. I loved the suspense element and I enjoyed reading the dialogues. I loved the cover! It fits the theme of the novel so well. This is not your usual military drama, folks. It is neat and very entertaining.

Reviewed by K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite Veil of Deception is a military thriller novel by author Michael Byars Lewis. Our central hero is Jason Conrad, an Air Force Captain with considerable experience in very fast planes. Pining for a better time that has already passed, Jason is on a path to destruction with booze and anonymous one night stands. After a massive jet crash rocks his world, his life takes an even worse turn when he’s listed to be sacked for one mistake. Jason believes that his life might finally be picking up when a new opportunity appears, but all is not what it seems. Secret projects and pressure from all sides force Jason to his limit, whilst his emotional side is about to wrecked by an incredibly beautiful new face. Fans of gritty, realistic fiction are sure to enjoy Michael Byars Lewis’ no nonsense style. The author sets his scenes with great precision, crafting snappy dialogue and keeping readers guessing as to the true intentions of many of the central characters to the narrative. The plot moves surprisingly quickly for a 400+ page novel, making for an engaging and page turning tale of action, betrayal, secrecy and thrills. Despite the opening scenes of the novel, I was pleased to see the presence of strong women in the story as the narrative went on, which made for an interesting and modern mix of perspectives unique in this genre. Veil of Deception is an ideal read for fans of high octane thrills and a varied cast of realistic characters.

Reviewed by Ryan Jordan for Readers' Favorite Veil of Deception by Michael Byars Lewis is about Air Force Captain Jason Conrad and the shadowy operation that he becomes a part of after his years in the air force. He is self-destructive and falling apart, and he ends up making a terrible mistake and crashing an expensive plane. But, just when he thinks his life of flying jets is over, he is pulled into a new world where he has to deal with more than just flying planes. The story starts with a cleverly written opening scene where one of our characters, Sherri, is seducing a Middle Eastern man as a stripper to gain information about him, and it is an excellent introduction to this woman who becomes central to the plot. Jason has to decide who he can trust and he has to overcome a lot of obstacles working against him if he's going to survive this new position in an organization he barely understands. This is a very well-written story with a lot of surprises and twists along the way. I liked the relationship between Sherri and Jason and the issues they had to face. All of the characters are deep and have a lot of personality, and the story itself is incredibly easy to read. I liked Sherri because she simply wouldn't give up on her story, even up to the end. Veil of Deception by Michael Byars Lewis is an excellent novel about an Air Force pilot who is getting a sort of second chance to clean up his life. Great story! I loved it.

Reviewed by Kathryn Bennett for Readers' Favorite Veil of Deception by Michael Byars Lewis introduces us to Air Force Captain Jason Conrad who flew and instructed the supersonic T-38 for many years. He slowly began to slide into a self destructive life style, however, he was still considered one of the best instructors on the base. After a jet crash, Jason is on a short list of those on the base who are about to be shown the door, but he finds himself surprisingly assigned to the home of the U.S Air Force Flight Test Center. Jason should have guessed not everything is as it appears. Jason becomes trapped between two different complications on an assignment where he deals with a contractor who may not be on the up and up. If that wasn't bad enough, fate seems to align against him and brings up his past, once more putting Jason in danger of losing his life. I love a good military style book. I love action and intrigue and I even love a hero who is far from perfect. Jason certainly ticks the box of not being perfect, even as a hero. He is a very flawed man, but in his heart of hearts he is a good man who wants to do the right thing. This is a book that keeps you guessing with the turn of every page and gives you more to ponder; you never quite catch up with everything until the end. I know I did not want to set this one down because I was fully invested in the life and turmoil that Jason was going through. Michael Byars Lewis knows how to craft a fantastic story that keeps you interested, and a flawed character that makes you want to help him. I highly recommend this read.

Reviewed by Anne-Marie Reynolds for Readers' Favorite Veil of Deception by Michael Byars Lewis is a military tale. Jason Conrad is a captain in the Air Force as well as an instructor for the supersonic T-38. Jason’s life is on a downward spin but he is still seen as the best. While out on a training flight, the plane crashes although both pilots manage to eject in time. But now Jason is waiting to be kicked off the force; after all, this isn’t his first “accident.” He isn’t the only one who is shocked to find himself assigned to the US Air Force Test Flight Center instead of being kicked out, and when they assign him to a secret project he knows that all is not what it seems. Jason is caught up in the middle – on one side is the General who wants him out and on the other is a journalist who thinks he should be in prison and will do anything it takes to see him there. The secret project is about to take a mysterious turn when a blast from his past appears, along with a beautiful woman. What is the secret project and will it cost Jason more than his career? Veil of Deception by Michael Byars Lewis is a thrilling read. Full of intrigue, the scene is nicely set at the start of the story. There is plenty going on, lots of twists and turns, and the plot is neatly written to hook the reader and draw them straight in – which it does. The characters were developed in a way that gave me time to get to know them through the story and form a “bond” with them. The storyline is full of intrigue and there is a lot of action. The whole story pulls together neatly, leading to a nail biting finish, and I guarantee that no reader will put this one down until it’s over. Mr. Lewis clearly demonstrates that he has the skills to compete with some of the top thriller and intrigue writers of today and I look forward to reading more from him in the near future.
