Originally recorded by producer, Robert De Pieri in 1989, 1994 and 1995, for the Rivoalto label of Italy this attractive compilation includes some well known figures as well as several lesser known names. At one time or another each of these composers was affiliated with Venice’s famed San Marco. Stylistically, the compositions range from Plainchant, a variant particular to the vicinity, through late Renaissance Polyphony. The consistently excellent performances feature five distinct vocal and instrumental ensembles. Tracks 3-6 on Disc 3 are especially strong. The sound is natural and resonant throughout. Liner notes are extensive. This release constitutes yet another valuable resurrection/restoration courtesy of Newton Classics.
