- La Traviata, opera
In this legendary live recording of La Traviata made in Lisbon in March 1958, Maria Callas and Alfredo Kraus make an unbeatable one-two punch. Callas is as intense and visionary as in her 1955 recording conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini. Kraus, always at his best in live recordings, shows the ardor and agility that made him the most refined romantic tenor since Tito Schipa. The underrated conductor Franco Ghione leads the orchestra of the San Carlos Opera House with idiomatic grace. The audible prompter can be annoying, but adds to the excitement of the live occasion. This is still one of the finest Traviatas ever recorded.
