Overview

The Promise Ring has been trying for three years to shrug off the "emo-core" tag that's haunted the band ever since their 1996 debut garnered comparisons to the punk sub-genre's titans, Sunny Day Real Estate. And while that likening was apt early on, the band have since lost the major trapping of emo: angst. VERY EMERGENCY, the Milwaukee band's third album, is their most straight-up pop effort to date, zipping along merrily with lots of big hooks, buoyant rhythms, and hummable melodies. Catchy ditties like "Deep South" and "Happy Hour" find the Ring sounding like a slowed-down Superchunk, with singer Davey von Bohlen's high-end voice even evoking that band's singer, Mac McCaughan. Von Bohlen's crackly voice is the perfect vehicle for smart-alecky lines like "We could do more outdoor things, if we weren't so busy getting busy." And while he's far from a polished crooner, his slight lisp and the nasal quality to his voice make him sound like any kid you knew in high school. Indeed, it is these songs' youthful quality -- the exuberance, the guileless lyrics ("It's the end of the world today, you dropped a bomb on my bad day"), the sense that the band, already so damn good, will only get better with age -- that makes VERY EMERGENCY one of 1999's best punk records, emo or not.
