i didn't care much for this book. the story is a little unbelievable and the characters have no charm. the plot is different, but in agatha raisin style, lots of bungling.

This is the third Agatha Raisin book I've read and it's the weakest. It's classified as a Mystery, but the focus is mostly on Agatha's man-chasing. She's meaner here and more foolish too. The books are starting to be too much like a pattern format. Agatha chases a man; Agatha finds a body; Agatha bunbles around; Agatha almost gets killed. The police are invisible and no neighbors in this small tow notice Agatha breaking into homes. The worse part is when her cats are taken and the entire police force and everyone in her neighborhood get out to find....her CATS. It's too unbelievable. Agatha isn't very linteresting in this book. I check them out from the Library. With so few pages and very little plot that's new, I wouldn't buy this book..

The book was a pleasant enough mystery. But do not read the excerpt which follows. It is for book 17 and contains what was a disappointing spoiler for me.

I like M C Beaton's books, either the Agatha Raisin or Hamish Macbeth series. She writes so I can just feel like I am in the village of Carsely. I like the townspeople and the local shops and restaurants. Agatha Raisin is a busybody but a funny busybody. The new Vet in town is dead, but is it an accident or murder? The police say accident but Agatha and her neighbor James Lacey think murder. They start asking questions and get in trouble with other people in the villege as welll as the police. The Vet had talked several women into giving him money, supposedly to build a new clinic and then he would name the clinic after them. The clinic was never started and some wanted their money back but the Vet refused. Could the murderer be, Mrs. Parr, Mrs. Mason, Freda, Miss Webster, Miss Simms or maybe, just maybe, someone else. The ending is very good with Agatha getting a good scare. A light mystery that is not full of gore and horror. I enjoy this series very much.

Agatha is once again smitten by good looks in a middle-aged man. This time it's a vet who doesn't like cats and dogs, just larger farm animals. Usual, delightful M.C. Beaton style and a lot of fun!

I would have liked the story to have been longer. As it was, it took me just a little over one night's reading to start and finish the book.

If you have never read a mystery, these are the books for you. I never liked mystery, but these books are whimsical and easy to read.
