Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
"Celebrations in my World" is a series that covers more than forty holidays from around the world. The focus of this title is Victoria Day. It opens with a brief history of Queen Victoria in the British Empire. One of the more interesting facts, which appear in blue insets on various spreads, notes that the Commonwealth of Nations is made up of two billion people from fifty-four different countries. The Commonwealth of Nations is a group of countries that once belonged to the British Empire. Most Canadians take great pride in their heritage and there are several pages relating to the current monarchy. The Canadians celebrate Victoria Day on the first Monday before May 25th and it creates a lovely three-day weekend just before summer starts. Not all Canadians celebrate the same way or the same day. The First Nations People celebrate on May 24th, a holiday known as bread and cheese day; while those in Quebec celebrate the holiday as National Patriots' Day to honor French-Canadian patriots who fought against the British in 1837—38. The closing pages contain a quiz (answers provided), glossary, and index. The background and changes in the holiday celebrations as well as the current ways that Victoria Day is celebrated are complex, but the author has made it understandable to young readers and has populated the text with attractive full-color illustrations.
