A Victorian Flower Dictionary: The Language of Flowers Companion by Mandy Kirkby

“A flower is not a flower alone; a thousand thoughts invest it.”
Daffodils signal new beginnings, daisies innocence. Lilacs mean the first emotions of love, periwinkles tender recollection. Early Victorians used flowers as a way to express their feelings—love or grief, jealousy or devotion. Now, modern-day romantics are enjoying a resurgence of this bygone custom, and this book will share the historical, literary, and cultural significance of flowers with a whole new generation. With lavish illustrations, a dual dictionary of flora and meanings, and suggestions for creating expressive arrangements, this keepsake is the perfect compendium for everyone who has ever given or received a bouquet.

This book is everything and more that I could have wished for! The foreword by Vanessa Diffenbaugh gives a thorough description of different cultures importance’s behind the meaning of flowers, answering questions such as “why do flowers play such a significant role in our lives” and “what do they represent and reveal”? The book itself covers in depth fifty featured flowers, an image of the flower and origin of its meaning are accompanied by usually fun facts of such flowers being displayed in art or a poem featuring the flower. In the back of the book is a complete dictionary from A to Z as well as a Flowers for a Specific Occasion section. This section gives a sort of instruction on flowers that can be given for courtship, weddings, births and christenings, illness, friendship, and funerals. Mrs. Diffenbaugh really outdid herself on this book! I loved it and look forward to referencing it when I have an occasion to give flowers…using a secret language to say I love you or hate you is really fun!
