About the Author

John Everson is the author of the Bram Stoker Award-winning novel COVENANT, as well as SACRIFICE, THE 13TH, SIREN, THE PUMPKIN MAN and NIGHTWHERE. He has also published dozens of short stories over the past 20 years in a variety of magazines and anthologies. In October of 2000, many of his erotic horror tales were collected and published in hardcover by Delirium Books as his first book-length collection, CAGE OF BONES & OTHER DEADLY OBSESSIONS.

His second collection, VIGILANTES OF LOVE, which focused more on fantasy, lighter horror and the macabre, followed three years later. His more recent fiction collections include NEEDLES & SINS (2007), CREEPTYCH (2010) and DEADLY NIGHTLUSTS (2010).

Everson is also the co-founder of Dark Arts Books, a member of the Horror Writers Association (HWA), and a former pop music critic for a suburban Chicago newspaper. Despite an omnipresent nagging dream of relocating to warmer climes, John still lives in the western suburbs of Chicago with his wife Geri, his son Shaun, and a petulant cockatoo. Vigilantes of Love is a quirky collection of horror short stories. Each story has a particular feel like these are tales that have been told to children through the ages to reinforce different moral lessons. I savored each story and refused to rush through them. The stories offer an obscure look into everyday people, which makes each story uncomfortably believable. The stories run the gambit of stark humor, family ties, adolescent wishes and harsh reality. There is a story here for everyone to enjoy. Honestly I enjoyed all the stories; they made me take stock of what I have around me. I have no doubt I will be visiting these stories again.

I know that John Everson is somewhat known for his more "adult" horror novels, but this collection was my first exposure to him, and it proves that he is not a one-trick pony, but a writer who can stretch and explore different types of stories. Vigilantes of Love is a collection that is full of magic. Some of it gentle, some of it dark, but almost all of it lyrical and affecting. The stories here are written with a sure hand, they flow naturally and aren't overwritten. The writing is stylish and almost poetic at times, but always accessible. Even when he is writing about truly horrible things, there is always a beauty to the tales. My favorite tales in the bunch are "Love Song," "The Fifth Step," and "The Humane Way."
