Having not read the first in this series, I can't say whether it's an improvement or not. It's been a while since I read a viking novel and this one pulls on Norse mythology which I am ALL there fore. But... it fell a bit flat for me.  I think I missed something having not read book 1. I felt like Astrid and her love interest, Luke, had something going in the previous installment that was meant to carry over into this novel but I didn't have that so their relationship was missing something.  I liked Astrid well enough. She's a tough warrior chick, all about showing her strength and never appearing weak. But she's also super insecure about herself and it clashed with the rest of her personality (and not in a good way). And much like in many of the romances I pick up, stubbornness and trust issues abound. I really wish authors would use different personality traits to cause problems between a couple because I see these ALL THE TIME and it gets old. It takes forever for the characters to finally overcome their problems, by which point I'm thoroughly frustrated with the book. Plus, I rarely find it done in a way that seems natural and not just a plot device.  Luke was an alright love interest. I thought he was supposed to be this super vengeful figure but never really felt it. And his entire occupation seemed wrong because if this wasn't fiction, he probably would get fired pretty quick.  As for the story, it has plenty of action and is perfect for fans of more fantastical romances. I'd say it's entertaining, though not necessarily an great book. I wanted more Norse mythology tie-ins, since that was a huge part of the draw of this book for me, but didn't really get them other than the obvious Valkyries.  Overall, fun, but not a series I feel invested in enough to read the previous books or any future installments.

She can’t let him discover…Immortal Vikings are among us Astrid Irisdotter is a Valkyrie-a fierce warrior fighting to protect humanity from the evil god Loki and his brutal minions. She’s on an urgent mission for her queen when everything goes hideously sideways. Undercover agent Luke Holden arrives on the scene just in time to save her life-and put his own on the line. Luke may have saved her, but that doesn’t mean Astrid can trust him. Tempers flare as they hide secret upon secret from each other, but Astrid’s inner warrior knows what it wants…and it will not take “no” for an answer. Review: I kept my eye out for this book after reading the first one and as soon as I saw it was up to be requested, I hit that "Send Request" button. First thing I was attracted to was that this one going to be Luke and Astrid's story. Then of course after reading the first book in the series I was hooked on the premise and the mythology behind it. The story and the series blends Norse mythology and contemporary times. There is still the whole genetics mystery in the story and the wolverines are getting stronger and then they are up to something new with kidnapping young women. Astrid and Luke's romance that started as a one night stand turns even hotter and soon becomes more than either expected. I am still enjoying this Author's writing style and world building and great characters. I am not sure where the series is going next, but I cannot wait to find out. This is fast-paced, action packed and super sexy story. 4Stars *I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.*

In a forest in Washington State lies a fortress where immortal Vikings hide. They must stop half-god Loki from annihilating the human realm. As Loki is not permitted to roam the earth – Midgard – he has henchmen do his dirty deed, wolverines. The immortals’ new queen, Naya, asked her friend Astrid Idrisdotter to find her brother Scott for her impending wedding. Astrid is determined to go at it alone to redeem herself for her previous mission, which went quite badly. Alas, luck is not on Astrid’s side when she runs into a few problems: new, improved wolverines, Scott who has vanished, and Luke Holden, with whom she had had a one-night-stand… If only to give you an idea how good VIKING WARRIOR REBEL is, I am not a fan of mythology per se, and I loved this book! Ms. Bradley knows her subject, but better still she is able to smoothly weave mythology, paranormal, suspense and romance seamlessly, thus creating a fresh new world. I ran into some difficulties at the beginning of the story for a somewhat peculiar reason: while they are masterfully written, there were too many action scenes, mostly fighting and sparring scenes, to my taste. However, around halfway through the book, things really take off. I hope Ms. Bradley won’t mind, but almost from the onset I pictured Jason Statham as Luke: Luke is a tough, no-nonsense alpha male, an undercover special agent, but he has a tender side and he is very sweet. He has a terrific backstory, and I would have wished to know even more. Astrid is just a fabulous heroine, and she will forever remain my perception of a Valkyrie. The romance in VIKING WARRIOR REBEL is simply glorious! The lust that Luke and Astrid experience is palpable, but they work well together, they respect each other’s talents, they are equally strong and wilful, and in spite of major bumps on the road, they trust each other, they have each other’s back. The banter is terrific all around, the characters are all well defined, but what I liked the most is the distinctive spins Ms. Bradley put on a few commonplace paranormal elements. Life mates – själsfrände – are not exactly what we’re used to see, and both Luke and Astrid are somewhat baffled by what it entails. Berserkers, a sort of collective conscience shared by the immortal Viking warriors goes deeper than what we usually see in shifters: it’s more existential than a mere communication device, if you will; it’s the essence of the Viking warriors’ soul and I loved how that it’s much more fluid and that it is not static. And it helps a lot to see real Swedish, and not some made-up Scandinavian drivel. I wonder if there will be some Finnish mythology in the future as well… I have no idea what Ms. Bradley has in store for us in the third instalment (there will be a third book, won’t it?), but I will be waiting because the possibilities are endless! VIKING WARRIOR REBEL is an innovative, exciting paranormal romance that goes beyond the usual fare; a terrific book! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I give 4 ½ stars
