Overview

The Village by Bing West, Peter Berkrot

Few American battles have been so extended, savage and personal. A handful of Americans volunteered to live among six thousand Vietnamese, training farmers to defend their village. Such "Combined Action Platoons" (CAPs) are now a lost footnote about how the war could have been fought; only the villagers remain to bear witness. This is the story of fifteen resolute young Americans matched against two hundred Viet Cong; how a CAP lived, fought and died. And why the villagers remember them to this day.

If you want to learn about a different kind of war that was fought in Vietnam and may be the solution to Afghanistan and Iraq, this is the book for you. Bing West really caught the essence of what it was like to be in the CAP Units. On a local basis, CAP units were winning the hearts, minds and cooperation of the people all over I Corps. I was there in 1968-69.

This was an amazing book. The author is very skilled in his writing and captures you. I am 23 and thus was not around for the Vietnam era, but of all the books I've read so far, this has been the best at 'putting you there'. Very touching and enlightening. I recommend to anyone and everyone. Also, even though there is a lot of combat throughout the book it's not gorey or antyhing for the most part which is nice. *Pictures too. Also Recommend: 5 Years to Freedom & Dear Mom: A Sniper's Vietnam.
