Overview

COLES WRITES WITH VERACITY, WITH A DELICIOUS STREAK OF SUBVERSION.”
STEVEN ERIKSON, New York Times bestselling author of Gardens of the Moon

Lieutenant Katja Emmes is assigned to the fast-attack craft Rapier, joining a mission to investigate weapons smuggling activity between the Terran colonies of Sirius and Centauria. If true, this act of rebellion could escalate rapidly, and lead to all-out war.

When combat does erupt, its ferocity stuns the Terran forces, and pushes them to their limits. It tests the abilities of Lieutenant Emmes, as well, along with Sublieutenant Jack Mallory and Lieutenant Commander Thomas Kane, commanding officer of the Rapier. But failure is not acceptable.

They must defeat the enemy... by whatever means necessary.

Interesting enough for a quick read

Fast paced science fiction action and strong attention to character development creates a compelling drama that draws you in convincingly. This author blends his in-depth military experience with a credible mind expanding sense of technological and future world possibility. A significant element is one of the main proponents, Lt. Kaija Emmes', 'coming of age' leadership struggles. This is very well conceived and written sci-fi.

Vivid and hard hitting, if you’re into Sci Fi military sagas, Virtues of War is one series you will want on the shelf. It's a cracking good story written as fiction from an author with real military background. The characters are much more than two D, they jump off the page. Each character holding a leading role more than hold up as a force in their own rite. Get into Virtues of War, you won't be sorry!

I have to say right up front that, Virtues of War is a really good science fiction read. For me, one of the defining qualities of a science fiction novel is its believability. To accomplish this, an author should provide a range of details that are consistent and have a measure of depth. Bennett Coles is a good wordsmith and his military background clearly is beneficial in this regard. He is able to take what he knows in current times and then convincingly use these technical understandings and apply them to a world beyond ours. His capacity to do this is truly impressive. Bennett Coles boasts evident skills in presenting and developing characters. The heroine is a complex person, one complete with various personal traits that one can readily identify with; she is not some superhero, rather she is a person who responds to crisis in heroic fashion. I certainly recommend this novel and because of the aforementioned qualities I would recommend it not only to those who key in on science fiction reading but also to those who might only dabble in science fiction or who might just like a good story. This book reaches out to many audiences.

Absolutely loved it! Lots of great military action and sci-fi fun, but the story was anchored by complex, fascinating characters who were much richer than most in this genre. Dark themes about human were explored, but seamlessly woven into a fast-paced, thrilling adventure anyone can enjoy. Can't wait for the sequel!
