In searching for a book, I usually take reader reviews quite seriously, however I was wrong this time. I was trying to find a good, biographical history of Vlad Dracula, the man, not the myth. When reading the reviews I felt this book may have what I looking for...WRONG. I didn't realize this book was only a novel...trying to be a biographical history. It was like reading a romance book for the young reader written on a fifth grade level. I realize the author was rated as a historian, but what went wrong? Anyone studying medieval life would know this was a bit odd. If there was indeed some historical content, it was totally lost in the slow moving, 'over-acted' narrative. I made it through about 6 chapters and sent the book back. I would not even keep this as a re-reader or historical reference book. If you are just looking for a light reading novel and are willing to struggle through page after page of foolish narrative, then this is for you. But if you are a serious historian looking for a well written book about the life and times of Vlad Dracula...don't waste your time and money...keep serching. I got more out of 'The Historian', a Dracula based novel, written on a higher reading level than I did this.

Decent story, but it needed a copy editor.

Being an avid reader of legend and folklore from different countries, I really appreciate what Augustyn did for the Dracula historical myth in this book. His research for it is very in-depth, and I enjoyed reading about the cultural and regional activity surrounding Dracula. In all, this book is a great overview of and homage to Dracula's strategical expertise, and a testament to folklore with the surprising final chapter, the name of which sums up the understanding of its meaning.

I'm disappointed only at the fact that this book has been out for five years, and I had never heard of it until a few months ago. I loved the book! It provided an accurate history of the times, and gave an insightful look into the life of Dracula and those associated with him. I loved the ending; it threw me for a loop. I thought the book was strictly historical, and then they provide a chapter of folkloric history. It's a book for any fan of Vlad Dracula, historical or folkloric.
