Although it was written before the middle of the 19th century, A Voice of Warning is still a clear exposition of the history and doctrine of the LDS Church, as far as it was known when the book was written. It does not discuss temple ordinances and vicarious work for the dead because both these elements of the restored gospel were revealed after the work was written. It clearly connects the restoration of the gospel that began in 1820 with Old and New Testament prophecies, thus showing how the establishment of the LDS Church is a fulfillment of ancient prophecies. Great-Great Grandpa Parley's writing style reflects the times in which he wrote, and may therefore seem a little over the top for modern readers. That said, his message is as timely and important now, early in the 21st century as it was when he wrote during the 19th century.
