Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It was only a matter of time before the graphic format trickled down to juvenile books and in this case that is not a good thing. Wooden, comic-book style, square-jawed, characters utter stilted and trite dialog while the brief narrative reduces the historical voyage to its bare essentials. In four brief chapters, the reasons for the voyage, the voyage itself, and the first year in the new and inhospitable world are covered in a storyboard format. If this is meant to appeal to the reluctant reader, one wonders why the bibliography contains books that are for adult readers and over 200 pages in length. A better choice for this age group might be If You Sailed on the Mayflower by Ann McGovern (Scholastic, 1991) and National Geographic's photo essay published in 2003, Mayflower 1620. 2006, Capstone Press, Ages 9 to 12.
