I should have done my homework before making a purchase. The album may have been released in 2000, but it was recorded in Germany in 1943. The sound quality is one issue, but wondering what luminaries of that time period may have been in the audience certainly casts a pall over any enjoyment the opera may provide. Who thought it was a good idea to resurrect this performance? This is one recording that will stay on my shelf.
To answer the question of the other reviewer, this is being sold for one reason: Furtwangler. Yes, the sound quality isn't what we're used to, but the transfer is actually very good considering it was the '40s and wartime. And yes, there were Nazis in the audience, but I don't rate music by who is listening--does anyone, really? Furtwangler's conducting is excellent, as always. I wish I could've seen him in person (but not in Nazi Germany ;)) Astute people will see Max Lorenz's name, but he was in decline by the time this was made. Is this a MUST HAVE? No. There are better Meistersingers out there. But if you love Furtwangler, get this. You will never hear, or see, his like again.
