I bought Wailoa and Kukui for my two grandchildren as gifts. My granddaughter who is 13 loved the book and said "I'm going to save this for MY children!" and my little 2 year old grandson, who loves turtles, would not put it down! I can't wait for the next book to come out. They will definitely receive that one also! This wonderful book also brings back fond memories of my trips to Hawaii!

I was blessed to meet Mr. Aaron T. Watene, the author of this gentle and lovely book while on vacation in Oahu. Once I opened the book, saw the beautiful, colorful illustrations and read the first two pages, I knew that I was going to have to buy the book for my 6 year old granddaughter and her little sister. At its simplest, it's a story of a turtle who suffers the loss of his home (his shell), the embarassment he feels and his efforts to find it. Ultimately, he finds a friend that also has a problem and together they are able to help each other. Mr. Watene's website papanuithestoryteller.com has activities to support the book and lovely, uplifting music too. I really enjoyed the book myself and I am not a child.

I have a soft spot in my heart for anything that is centered in the Hawaiian islands. I love island lore and culturally based stories and this one does not disappoint! It is truly an inspirational story of how two beings struggling with their own unique set of challenges can work together and overcome their obstacles by working together. It is a story of friendship, and loyalty. I also love the illustrations! Absolutely breathtaking and so colorful! I can't wait to see what this talented duo of writer and illustrator come up with next!
