Waiting for Summer's Return by Kim Vogel Sawyer

All alone on the Kansas prairie, Summer Steadman has few options. With her husband and children lost to illness, she has no desire to continue on farther west to where she and her husband planned to build their future. Instead, she seeks employment in a small Mennonite community in order to be near the graves of her family.

Widower Peter Ollenburger, the local gristmill owner, needs someone to teach his young son. When he hears of a "learned woman" in town, he believes she is the answer to his prayers. He soon discovers, however, that helping this outsider may have troublesome consequences.

There is little this father will not do for his son, but as the boy begins to look at Summer as more than a teacher, Peter must make a choice. Does he marry this woman to give his son a new mother, or does he marry only for love?

Will Summer's broken heart ever be able to love again?

I loved this story about a young woman who decides to leave an abusive past in search of a new life. I could not put it down! The word pictures made me feel as if I were actually watching as the story unfolded! The story line was gentle and warmed my heart. It was a love story on a whole new level. A story of forgiveness and hope. It will leave the reader wanting more! It is a top notch book, that I will read again!

Kim Vogel Sawyer has painted a beautiful story of a growing love and a returning to faith after the unthinkable occurs. Summer Steadman accepts a position as a teacher to Peter Ollenburger's son, but gradually begins to love her student and his father as they grow to love and accept her as part of their family. Summer and Peter both finally begin to realize their true love for each other only as she prepares to leave. How long will he have to wait for Summer's return? I highly recommend you read this book and find out. You'll enjoy the journey.

From the first page of this delightful book, I was swept back to 1894 and the windswept plains of Kansas. Sawyer does a fantastic job making the era and characters spring to life. I was engrossed in the struggles of the characters and delighted in their triumphs. With each sentence she paints a vivid picture of this unique German setting and places you deep inside the minds of the main characters. It is easy to fall in love with the gentle giant Peter Ollenburger who is filled with wisdom that he shares carefully. And I grew with Summer through each test and victory. If you thought there wasn't a fresh twist on the prairie romance, think again. And if you love Janette Oke's books, you will be delighted with Waiting for Summer's Return.

This is a truly remarkable novel. Kim Vogel Sawyer paints vivid images of gentle people in an untamed land and shows God's love and guidance, for those who seek it. I had a hard time putting the book down!

From the first page to the last, Sawyer's ability as a word weaver captured me and immersed me in the world she creates. With an obvious gift for story-telling, none of her characters are stereotype or predictable. The grossmutter's slow acceptance of Summer rang true with none of the expected shenanigans. The boy, Thomas, watched his new teacher with a child's curiosity and the wary prejudice of the sect's teachings about outsiders. Sawyer portrays him with insight, making him come alive. The Mennonites within the community who don't want Summer in their midst are not over-written, but presented with an honesty that displays their tribulations and traditions. I found the evolution of Summer's faith to be guileless, without preaching or manipulation. I applaud Sawyer for not detailing the conversion of Summer's mother-in-law which in this reviewer's humble opinion, kept it from being too tidy a package. We've all heard the words before, but in this case they're true. The character's literally lodge themselves in the reader's heart. Tender and poignant, this book receives a high recommendation.

There she goes...harriet klausner,,,ruining another book with her excessive book report. Come on bn...when are you ever going to do something to this obnixiius poster? Delete her posts, ban her. Its bad enough that other posters sees her getting away with revealing every detail of the book, so now 99% of posters do it because of her. Please put a stop to these rude plot spoilers now.

Widower Peter Ollenburger knows his son needs Summer¿s help. As a recent widow and without work, she must make a decision quickly before time and money run out. He also knows that Summer Steadman needs them and feels the Lord prompting him to help her. What happens next takes everyone by surprise¿ I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A unique approach to the prairie romance, we get to see inside the Mennonite community at a time when it was still relatively new to this country. Most novels I have read seem to set their stories in this community in modern times¿when the differences in dress and mannerisms are more starkly contrasted. Here, however, we are treated to a time when a stranger in their midst would not feel quite so different from the others, until they attempted to blend in. Such is Summer¿s plight as she tries to make a life for herself in Gaeddert. Well-rounded characters (especially Peter) and dialogue make this a treat. An enjoyable novel with a satisfying conclusion, ¿Waiting for Summer¿s Return¿ is well worth your time and money.

Good end of summer reading. Loved the detailed descriptions of people, places, and things. Being a widow myself can well identify with Summer finding love again with a good Godly man. God was good to me as well.

I only read out of boredom and was not disapointed. Very good and very heart warming. Emotional as well, from horrible sadness to joy. I would have liked for one small extra thing to have happened at the end and this lost a star for me... I wont say what though as to not spoil the story for others :)

The book was slow and lagged in the middle with many repetitive situations. The end left one hanging and searching for more options of how the book could have ended better. It appears that the writer stopped and ended the book.

I truly enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down. It was nice to read something that had a good clean storyline.

It just seems too straightforward, the writing. The attempt is appreciated for character depth, but it seems like it drags on, then the characters mature, like an abrupt transition from a flat character to a round character. There is a decent plot, but the writing is...

What a great story!  Not only was this a good love story but the underlying themes of hope and forgiveness shine through.  I am in awe of Peter who thinks he is a simple man but his insight and wisdom and desire to serve his God are wonderful examples of how Christians should live.  He was gentle and loving without being "preachy" and made me want to emulate him.  I will be looking for more stories by this author.
