Waking the Princess (The Scottish Lairds Series, Book 2) by Susan King

Years ago, Christina Blackburn posed for a scandalous painting that rocked the Victorian art world--and nearly ruined her life. Now a proper antiquarian for the National Museum, Christina hides her smoldering beauty behind an icy façade and prim spectacles. When the museum sends Christina to examine an ancient Highland treasure, she comes face-to-face with the same notorious painting--and its dangerously handsome owner.

Sir Aedan MacBride knows that a local legend of a sleeping maiden says the estate’s heir must never fall in love, which suits him fine--until he meets Christina Blackburn. Convinced that the painting's beautiful model is the key to saving his threatened lands, he is desperate to discover what she knows about the old legend--yet he never expects love to interfere.

The entire story is depressing and has a sense of hopelessness throughout the book. There are some parts that just seem like filler, such as the out of control monkey, which seemed ludicrous. Overall, it was a well-written book, but i feel like i need to shake off the doldrums after reading it. I have the third book in the series & am determined to read it, but I am dreading it, based on the heaviness of the first two books.

THis is a beautifully written tale, very romantic and exciting, which gives a new and imaginative spin to the archetype of the Sleeping Beauty, setting it in Victorian times and weaving the characters and plot together with legends. The book is simply wonderful, a magical treat, and I really missed the story when it ended. I read it the day I got it. More! Can't wait for the next in this great trilogy! I won't give away plots in reviews, but I will say that I loved the quiet, intense, dedicated hero, Sir Aedan MacBride, who fights to save a legend though his own life is cursed by it, and the heroine, Christina, who hides her passionate heart and her secrets behind intellectual pursuits. The romance between these two is powerful and enjoyable. King is a masterful writer, and her voice is lyrical, compelling, and entertaining. The story story so convincing that I felt totally absorbed in the book, never bored, often surprised and delighted, and I felt, as a reader, completely part of the action and the characters. I loved WAKING THE PRINCESS even more than the fisrt in the series, TAMING THE HEIRESS, which was a great read. Looking forward to KISSING THE COUNTESS which I have pre-ordered. Apparently the other reviewer loved WAKING THE PRINCESS too but I wonder why she gave it three stars, since it sounds like she liked it as much as I did. FIVE STARS for this one. I loved Ms. King's medievals too, and am glad to say that this new novel is FABULOUS!!!!

Years ago, Christina Blackburn posed for a scandalous painting for her half mad husband. Shamed by it's eroticism, she, now widowed, has retreated into the guise of a staid, plain museum worker. She is blown away when an assignment for the museum brings her face to face with her past. Sir Aedan, the paintings current owner needs her help in learning the truth of a legend. He has already begun to fall in love with her without even meeting her, from the painting. Inevitably, he begins to be drawn to the real woman, despite the curse that looms over them. They are drawn to one another to such an extent, that when Christina's brother arrives to paint a less sensual sequel to the first portrait, he casts them in the role of star crossed lovers to make the new painting come alive. ............. *** While your children watch the newly reissued Sleeping Beauty, you can delight in this sweetly spiced fairy tale for adults. Weaving the magic of Camelot with the enchantment of true love, Ms. King delivers the type of fantasy that her readers have come to relish over the years. It might be interesting to note that there is a very similiar true story about a Spanish princess, though I do not know if the author was aware of this. ***
