Overview

Founded in 1846, Walker County is a scenic, sprawling territory of 800 square miles located in the southeastern region of Texas. Huntsville, the county seat, serves as home to Sam Houston State University, the Texas State Penitentiary, and Huntsville State Park. New Waverly, Riverside, and other smaller towns dot the landscape, which remains rustic and beautiful, with rolling hills, open prairies, and piney woods. Visitors to the area may find museums, restaurants, shops, and sporting events to attend.

About the Author

Jeffrey L. Littlejohn is a native Texan and avid collector of historical postcards. He currently serves as associate professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of History at Sam Houston State University (SHSU). Drawing on the postcard collection held by the Walker County Historical Commission, Littlejohn joined with local historians Carolyn Carroll, Donna Coffen, James Patton, and Tom Rogers to produce this book. Sam Houston State University graduate students Brooke Franks, Jami Horne, and Briana Weaver also contributed to the effort by providing much-needed research and photographic assistance.
