Walking on the Wind: Cherokee Teachings for Harmony and Balance by Michael Tlanusta Garrett

In the spirit of the highly acclaimed Medicine of the Cherokee, coauthored with his father J. T. Garrett, Michael Garrett shares with us the delightful, all-ages stories passed down from his great-grandfather and other medicine teachers. Blending his background as an Eastern Cherokee with his skills as a counselor, Michael reveals through these tales how to make sense of our experiences in life, see beauty in them, and be at peace with our choices.

"Michael's blend of traditional Cherokee ways with that of science and psychology illustrates that both Native and non-Native peoples can learn to thrive together...for the betterment of all" --Native Peoples magazine

This book goes into more detail about living the traditional way, but also the 'natural way,' in harmony with all living things and the Earth (which is all living). The teachings are on following what the Indians would call the good Red Road, as a spiritual path. I am seeking more harmony and balance and more of the 'natural way' as a way of 'being,' and this book really helped. Wisdom like walking 'with the earth' and not 'on it' has really helped changed my flow, increase my in-the-moment acceptance, and release my desire to always push for results. (I gave it 4 stars as I haven't finished reading it yet!)

This book really helps you find your center and like the other reviewer I could feel peace washing over me as I read it. This is a must have book. Very helpful and beautiful. I didn't agree with the Rule of Opposites as a generalisation but I loved the book. I certainly hope Michael Garrett writes more. His work is truly inspiring.

While reading this book, I felt an uncommon peace. I found it both enlightening and mentally soothing. Garrett writes with a special sensitivity that brings the images in his ancesterial stories to life in the mind of the reader. You hear the sounds, smell the forest, and feel connected to the great Cherokee People.

Walking on the Wind: Cherokee Teachings for Harmony and Balance by Michael T. Garrett is a wonderful book that is full of wisdom. I really enjoyed this book and it resonated very deeply with me. In this book we are shown how to be a helper in the traditional way by never taking more than we need, giving thanks for what we have and what we receive, using all of what we have, and giving away what we do not need. We are introduced to the sacredness of the four directions and what they represent. This book gives us a lot of traditional wisdom to help us live in harmony with all things. We are shown the Rule of opposites and how it emphasizes the role of choice in our lives. We are shown how to stay in harmony with the circle and the four directions among other things. I especially enjoyed the exercises found within which help us create peace for ourselves and harmony in our lives. I recommend this book to anyone who wants more harmony and balance in their lives. There is a lot of wisdom in this book. I especially enjoyed the prayer at the end in Tsalagi and also the prayer to the Four Directions in Tsalagi. I acknowledge that I received this book free of charge from Bear & Company Publishing in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion of the book.
