Wanda E. Brunstetter's Amish Friends Gatherings Cookbook is a new cookbook for weddings, parties, and other social gatherings. Released 1st June 2019 by Barbour on their Shiloh Run imprint, it's 224 pages and available in spiral bound format. The eARC provided was a 48 pages sample with recipes for (non-alcoholic)drinks, salads, desserts, main- and side-dishes, and helpful tips for cooking for a crowd, streamlining serving, and cleaning up. The photography is appealing and warm and emphasizes the comfort and simplicity of good food with good friends and family. The typography and layout are homey, with recipes presented individually, organized by section. Many of these recipes will be familiar to cooks who have had family recipes handed down for generations. The recipes all have ingredients listed in American standard measurements only. The written directions are clear and easy to follow. There is no nutritional information given for the sample recipes, and the contributors names are listed for each. I was surprised (and pleased) to see that some of the recipes included convenience ingredients. Also many of these recipes have large yields, perfect for parties, reunions, gatherings, etc. There is a strong theme of Christian fellowship and worship and the important role that food plays in the social and religious structure of believers. Five stars. (With the assumption that the rest of the recipes and book quality are to the same standard as the sample provided). Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

**I received a complimentary sample for consideration, all thoughts are 100% my own. First and foremost, it is important to note that this review is based upon a sample received and not the full cookbook. That being said, I enjoyed what I saw so much, that the full cookbook has most certainly been added to my wish list. I love a good cookbook. In fact, I have quite a collection of them that I use frequently. Some of my favorites are those that are not merely by one person, but those that feature a compilation of recipes from various sources. For me these are the best for two reasons. The first being that they tend to have a wider variety of styles, flavors, etc. Being by different individuals, they seem to just offer a lot more options to choose from. The second reason is that I find these type of cookbooks feature recipes that have been tried and trusted by REAL people--- not chefs, but at home cooks and bakers like myself. That's not to say they're always simple... I just personally feel like I know that these recipes are those that have some family history to them. I absolutely love that. This cookbook offers not only a wide variety of recipes that are perfect for church cookouts, family gatherings and more... but also lots of helpful tips and tricks for the occasion too. All of this is great, but more than anything I enjoyed the stories within as well. Food is such a staple in family celebrations, and one that is embedded in our memories so I love reading more about those memories within. It is more than JUST a cookbook. I was drawn to this book having read Amish fiction by Wanda E. Brunstetter in the past. The stories and the recipes within are going to be a great addition for anyone who is already a fan of her novels, or truly just anyone who loves a good ol' fashioned cookbook. It is certainly a welcome addition to my own collection, and one I know I will be turning to time and time again.

This book is typically what one would expect from Ms. Brunstetter. Heartwarming stories and delicious recipes galore. I’ll definitely be adding this one to my book shelf. I received a free e-copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This was a lovely magnification of the Amish community and how they gather together, along with the food that they share. I've always been enamored when it comes to the Amish and always jump at the chance to try any recipes that they share. I had a fantastic time taking all the recipes included in this new cookbook in and even set some time aside to try the ones that immediately caught my eye. I love a good drink, the Frozen Pear Slush jumped out at me because I love pears and it didn't disappoint. It was tasty and a recipe I'm sure to use again. I enjoy doing party style foods so I'm always looking for easy yet tasteful recipes to add to my collection. I've done a similar Tortilla Roll like the one listed but had to give this one a try because the ingredients were different from what I've used before. I can say I look forward to using it at a baby shower I will be hosting at the beginning of next month. Blackberries are my favorite fruit so when I saw the Blackberry Gelatin Salad I new I had to give it a go, being from the South I can say we love our "salads" so I'm happy to have a new one to try out on my family. There are so many recipes I look forward to taking on, the different cheesecakes, the Mini Key Lime Tarts, and the Brown Sugar Dumplings; to name a few. I adored reading the stories before each section and love the way the author put this wonderful cookbook together!!!

Wanda Brunstetter is my favorite Amish author. I wasn't disappointed when I read the cookbook. I love how she talks about Amish tradition and helpful hints in each chapter. The recipes are wonderful too. My favorite so far is the fried pies. They are better than store bought.

Wanda’s latest cookbook is chock full of wonderful recipes and beautiful illustrations that will have your mouth watering. There are recipes for just about every occasion…dips, breads and rolls, salads, casseroles and soups, bars and cookies, cakes and pies…oh my!! Another great feature is the section on feeding a crowd which includes recipes for punch, salads, and large main dishes such as would be served at an Amish wedding. As I read through the cookbook, I found myself planning a meal right down to the dessert. I’m having Summertime Punch, Warm Bacon Dip with crackers, Buttermilk Rolls, Broccoli Strawberry Salad, Baked Mac and Cheese, Beans and Mushroom Amandine, Copper Pennies, BBQ Ribs, and Fresh Apple Cake. Yum! Yum! Who wants to join me? Over 200 recipes to choose from!!! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

A nice offering of recipes for get togethers or church potlucks, even family meals. Easy to follow recipes, with easy to find ingredients and nice pictures throughout make this a nice looking cookbook to add to a cookbook collection. The only recipe my family has tried thus far was well liked by my clan. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

I love this cookbook! It's spiral bound and the perfect size to have open on your counter to read from while you are cooking and baking. There are plenty of pretty pictures and it is easy to read. My new favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe comes from this cookbook! There are a lot of interesting recipes in this cookbook. There is a recipe called Messy Pink Stuff which I definitely want to try. There are recipes called Pumpkin Snickerdoodles and Can't-Leave-Alone-Bars. There are also recipes for salads, breads, snacks, side dishes, main dishes, and desserts. There is a section on drinks which I like because I feel like I'm always struggling to come up with a punch recipe or other flavorful drink for showers and get-togethers. I am also intrigued by the section called "Recipes for Feeding a Crowd". These recipes call for ingredients such as "11 large heads of cauliflower" and "36 pounds ground beef". If I ever have to feed a crowd, this will be a great section to refer to! In addition to the great recipes, there are a page or two of stories in each section written by the author or friends of the author. There are various tips in each section, too, which I found very interesting and useful. Some of these tips include how to keep flies away, preparing food ahead of time, and transporting food. A majority of these recipes do appear to yield large amounts of food, even the recipes not in the feeding a crowd section. I halved the cookie recipe I mentioned above and it made 104 cookies. These recipes are probably not the healthiest choices by today's standards, but that being said, I highly recommend this cookbook! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

As a member of a large family who gather often, my most used recipe books are those that give me a broad choice of easy to assemble recipes using everyday pantry items. This cookbook hits all of those high notes plus you have the added plus of Wanda Brunstetter's backstory on the recipes. This book has already given our group some new favorites and added the author's friends to ours. Take an afternoon and browse this cookbook. You'll earmark many dishes to try.

If you enjoy reading Amish fiction and have wondered what it would be like to try your hand at making some of the delicious sounding food on their tables, look no more. Wanda E Brunstetter's Amish Friends Gatherings Cookbook is filled with over 200 delightful recipes. We love potlucks and this wonderful collection of recipes has earned its keep on the cookbook shelf. A lovely tea concentrate to prepare and freeze for a summer gathering is one I liked trying. Or, how about a nice bowl of Sweet Cheddar Popcorn, a nice switch from that bag in the microwave! I recommend this cookbook for anyone who loves to cook and try new, and not so new recipes.

I love reading Amish books and always seem to enjoy hearing about the meals that they prepare. They are usually wholesome and sometimes made with ingredients that they grow. When I was given this complimentary copy from Barbour Publishing I decided I not only wanted to try some of the recipes but also review them. I started with the Orange Drink found on page12 but had to change the measurements accordingly as I did not need 100 servings. I found it very tasty and would definitely try it again. The Butterhorn Rolls featured on page 34 where a taste my family enjoyed and I had some left over to freeze. The Melon Ambrosia found on page 47 was a huge hit with friends recently as it was cold and refreshing. Many of my friends had seconds. I tried the Best Beef Roast on page 86 and found it to be delicious and very tasty. Unfortunately, I have many more pages to choose recipes from but this is a cookbook you might want to try and experiment with.

Wanda E. Brunstetter’s Amish Friends Gatherings Cookbook brings a taste of Amish life to your kitchen. Beautifully illustrated with all full-color photos and pages, this cookbook is spiral-bound for easy use and contains over 200 recipes. Each section begins with a short informational page or story from either Wanda herself or Amish friends, followed by a few general tips applicable to that section. Food forms an important part of Amish events and socializing, highlighting the connection between food and fellowship. As such, this cookbook provides fodder for the heart as well as for the stomach. Thoughtfully organized into eight sections according to food type and including one for beverages as well, this handy cookbook is easy to navigate and offers a glimpse of Amish life. Three indices make it quick and easy to look up recipes by contributor, section, or key ingredients. Each recipe names the contributor and their city and state, with most hailing from the Midwest. The recipes are written for fairly large quantities, given that Amish families tend to be sizable, and the last section is comprised of recipes specifically tailored to cater to big groups. Seeing three designated gluten-free recipes pleasantly surprised me; these include gluten-free skillet corn bread, gluten-free breakfast casserole, and gluten-free angel food cake. Other recipes can be adapted to suit special diets, but overall this cookbook does not address specific dietary restrictions. Furthermore, the recipes are very succinct, such that a basic knowledge of cooking is necessary because there are not hints or extra details in the instructions. While I would not necessarily recommend this to a kitchen novice, for those with any kind of experience cooking or baking, this collection imparts unique recipes with some Amish wisdom on the side. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

What a wonderful cookbook to add to my collection, and I love the recipes and I love the personal tidbits included at the beginning of each section. This cookbook includes an index of recipes by Key Ingredients, but also by Section. Then credit is given to each of the contributors by adding their name and location, so yes, it is a cookbook by friends. There is even a bunch of recipes for feeding a crowd, I can just picture these at a family reunion, or possibly at a church gathering. We are also gifted with some wonderful pictures of the results of these delicious recipes, that sure make you want to get cooking! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

This is a wonderful addition to my extensive cookbook collection, as I love cooking and baking for family and friends. I’m constantly in need of encouragement and motivation when it comes time to prepare meals. It gets hum-drum preparing the same comfortable go-tos. Well, this book has certainly inspired me! I love it when a cookbook has illustrations. And I’m especially pleased that the recipes call for simple, already on hand ingredients. Amish Friends Gathering Cookbook contains more than recipes. Each section opens with a meal-gathering inspired Amish story or memory—a nice addition to this book. The Table of Contents is straightforward and organized, and the Index of Recipe by Key Ingredients in the back of the book is unique and handy! A photo and recipe for BBQ Ribs make my mouth-water, and I plan to prepare it very soon. And a Sausage Spaghetti Pie recipe is almost identical to a dish my friend made for me after I had surgery a few years back. I’ll make that one as well, and it will undoubtably bring back memories of her kindness. One of the greatest aspects of this book—other than the recipes, of course—is that it is spiral-bound. It’s so nice to have the book lie flat when preparing a meal, or to have the ability to fold the book open. I really can’t think of a single con to this cookbook. The illustrations are inspiring, the recipes are simple and practical, and the stories shared are entertaining and comforting. I get my love of cooking and cookbook collecting from my grandmother. One of her favorite cookbooks to purchase was Amish cookbooks and I have quite a collection. So when I saw this cookbook, I had to take a peek! I received a Sampler to review before release day from Netgalley. Even though I only saw a sampler, you get a lovely variety of simple home-style recipes that reminds you of recipes past down from friends and family. I liked the look of this cookbook and won’t hesitate to purchase it when it releases to add to my overflowing collection of cookbooks. This one will be taken off the shelf frequently!
