Wandering West is a must read for anyone regardless if they were reared in any rural area of the country or whose family immigrated from Europe and settled in New York or California and reared their children in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It will bring back what your grandparents and parents attempted to teach each of us about regardless of the circumstances that life throws your way - remember the tenets taught by past generations of always trying to “do the right thing.” It will make one melancholy, but in a good way because it will help one remember your loved ones whether family or your extended family of friends and neighbors who cared about each other. It reminds us that tragedies happen to all of us and we all have and will have family traumas, but not to let it warp your sense of persevering and taking care of those who are important in your life, whether or not they want you involved – don’t stop trying. The younger generation will be gain a new sense of pride in their ancestry. It will take you through tragedies, triumphs, loyalties, disappointments and romance. Most of all it will give you a sense of belonging to something bigger than yourself, which is your own self-awareness of where you came from and why it was and is important to you how you live your life. I loved this book. It is set in south Texas and those who know the people and that rugged country will find the descriptions familiar and true to life. i would recommend this to anyone who loves western adventure with a little bit of romance and mystery thrown in. i am looking forward to more books by Mr. Stalcup and, hopefully, a sequel to this one.
