Overview

War Brides by Helen Bryan

An international bestseller with over one million readers.

With war threatening to spread from Europe to England, the sleepy village of Crowmarsh Priors settles into a new sort of normal: Evacuees from London are billeted in local homes. Nightly air raids become grimly mundane. The tightening vice of rationing curtails every comfort. Men leave to fight and die. And five women forge an unlikely bond of friendship that will change their lives forever.

Alice Osbourne, the stolid daughter of the late vicar, is reeling from the news that Richard Fairfax broke their engagement to marry Evangeline Fontaine, an American girl from the Deep South. Evangeline’s arrival causes a stir in the village—but not the chaos that would ensue if they knew her motives for being there. Scrappy Elsie Pigeon is among the poor of London who see the evacuations as a chance to escape a life of destitution. Another new arrival is Tanni Zayman, a young Jewish girl who fled the horrors of Europe and now waits with her newborn son, certain that the rest of her family is safe and bound to show up any day. And then there’s Frances Falconleigh, a madcap, fearless debutante whose father is determined to keep her in the countryside and out of the papers.

As the war and its relentless hardships intensify around them, the same struggles that threaten to rip apart their lives also bring the five closer together. They draw strength from one another to defeat formidable enemies—hunger, falling bombs, the looming threat of a Nazi invasion, and a traitor in their midst—and find remarkable strength within themselves to help their friends. Theirs is a war-forged loyalty that will outlast the fiercest battle and endure years and distance.

When four of the women return to Crowmarsh Priors for a VE Day celebration fifty years later, television cameras focus on the heartwarming story of these old women as war brides of a bygone age, but miss the more newsworthy angle. The women’s mission is not to commemorate or remember—they’ve returned to settle a score and avenge one of their own.

Amazon has this book on their Kindle. Any reason B & N doesn't? Wanted to read it on my Nook while I am on vacation.

A wonderful romantic book that isn't smutty. I really enjoyed this book. I bought this because my mother was a war bride. The book kept my interest

I would have loved to give this book five stars but it didn't quite cler the bar. Granted, keeping five stories going is a challenge to even the best pro and there were times when I wasn't sure whose head I was in. Switching POV within the same page, without a hiatus, makes it difficult for the reader. Still, I did learn some things about the situation on the home front in England during WWIi. Would I read her other book, the one on Martha Washington? Possibly.

I enjoyed this book and the ending caught me completely by surprise. The characters were believable - but I wish there was more about the twin girls. Guess I just like happy endings.

B&N should extract any reviews where the reader complains about the availability of the book. I found the book to be a dud. I didn't care about many of the characters and found them boring. I kept hoping the book would get better. Even the ending was ho hum. I would not recommend this to serious readers or book clubs.

The storyline flows well and for the most part is well written. It could be further edited to polish the book up and make it easier to read. It was a good story an kept my attention.

After many years as a Nook reader, I'm finally purchasing a Kindle as a supplement for exactly the reasons cited in the many frustrated replies: failure to offer enough of the titles that I seek.

Very interesting, historical fiction based on England's War Brides during WWII.  Enjoyed the majority of the characters and their nuances.  In the beginning the book was a little difficult to follow but soon enough, everything was clear and the story very good.

This is the reason I am considering ditching my Nook and getting a Kindle. Books I want are available on Kindle but not for Nook. Also, if the books I want are available, they are more expensive than the Kindle version. Please, B&N, I prefer the Nook over Kindle, but you are tying my hands.

This book was very good. I liked the characters and the tie ins. I appreciate the reality of what went on in those war years, and as time goes by I think society forgets what people went through during that war. We read this for our book club at work. My only negative comment is about the ending. I think it could have been a little more detailed, more personable, a little longer. One would have liked more insight into the lives and the discoveries of the past.

This is a great historical read! The storyline takes place in England during the blitz and the government evacuates mothers and children to the country because they expect to soon be at war with Germany. It was through these evacuations that five women met ...."the War Brides." The story begins in 1995 at the 50th anniversary - VE Day with the women who lived through this darkest hour. These war brides were being reunited in their wartime home of Crowmarsh Priors, England, to relive their experiences during the war and to reflect on how the war impacted their lives. I highly recommend this book!

This book was a good surprise. It's about a group of young women in England during WWII. The story flowed well and really kept my interest. It switched from a present day reunion to the war years. I really enjoyed reading it.

For those complaining about this book not being on Nook - look at the Publisher.  It is Amazon.  They don't have to make it available on Nook if they do not want to.  BN does a great job.  We have over 2 million books available on Nook, and the Nook device is the best e-reader out there.  Regarding the book War Brides, it is a very interesting story.  I recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book (on my Kindle) and wanted to get it for a family member's Nook as a gift, but it is not available. I'm disappointed...I had not realized that the Nook had fewer choices than the Kindle.
