An Excerpt from The War with Grandpa

This is the true and real story of what happened when Grandpa came to live
with us and took my room and how I went to war with him and him with me
and what happened after that.

I am typing it out on paper without lines on my dad's typewriter because
Mrs. Klein, she's my 5th grade English teacher, said that we should write
a story about something important that happened to us and to tell it "true
and real" and put in words that peoples said if we can remember and to put
quote marks around them and everything....

My little sister, Jennifer, just came in and asked me what I'm doing and
I told her....

"I think you should begin with me," Jenny said, "because I found out Grandpa
was coming to live here before you even knew about it."

"Good idea," I said.

"And put in the story that I am very beautiful with long blond hair and
lovely blue eyes."

"I just did."

"Now you'll have a good story," she said.

I am from India, a place where traditionally, there would be nothing remarkable in having one grandparent or both staying with the family -- although, in recent years urban society has tended to favor the western model. When my daughter's teacher picked this book as a reading choice for my daughter with autism, I wondered how big of a cultural divide I would have to leap. But I was pleasantly surprised. This is an utterly charming and convincing story told from a child's perspective. It awakens empathy in children. And it reminds adults that lessons in coexistence are either learned early or not at all.

I liked this book because it was funny and I liked the story. I didn't think the grandfather was going to go to war with his grandson over a room. This book helped me with my relationship with my brother. It taught me not to fight with my family over something dumb. I can now handle when my little brother goes into my room to touch my toys. I think that this book is entertaining for the whole family.

i think this book is ok ....because you should not fight over a room with someone who loves you alot more. you can get to share the room and that what i didnt not get i would have put a 4 but my frined think it can be a 5 i think that book could have more thing cuz fight wit fimy is wrong and i would ever do that to my grandma and thats all we have to say. i think the war with grandpa was agreat book because i learned that i should never have a war with your family or your was the greatest book i have ever read in my life was a fantastic book.

The war with grandpa was a good book seeing as it had humor included with a lesson. This book showed that war is just not about fun. War really hurts. war should be used in very strong occasions. You shoud never go to war with your kin.It can be very hurtful and offendive to the family member or members.

In the fifth grade our class read together this story. It was realistic and Pete and his Grandpa had a very funny 'war,' with a creative resolution to it.

Pete's grandpa comes to live at his house. Grandpa got to have Pete's room. Grandpa is sad because his wife died. Now Pete wants his room. Then they stared playing very mean tricks on each other. Will they ever get along?
Guest More than 1 year ago
This book keeps the reader flipping pages to find out what the next trick will be. Although it is a fun read, the story line doesn't have much pizzazz.

Peter is thrilled to learn his Grandpa Jack is coming up from Florida to live with him and his family. That is ,until Grandpa moves right in to Peter's room forcing him upstairs.Peter does not want to loose his room,so he asks his friends for advice His friends tell him to start guerilla warfare with his Grandpa Jack.Rather than give in,Grandpa tries to get even on his own. They used to be such great pals.Has their war gone to far?My book is called The War with Grandpa. It is excellent with you like to play tricks on people. The main character is a young boy named Peter with his friends Billy and Steven they get even with his Grandpa. My book goes into great detail about the war between the two. That is why I gave it 4 stars.

Peter had to give up his room. Although he loved his grandfather, he couldn't understand why he had to be the only family member to make a sacrifice so that his Grandpa could live with his family. Peter decided to declare war to regain his room--a war he could not win. His grandfather almost seemed to enjoy Peter's warring tactics and the opportunity to teach his grandson that war is not the answer. Grandpa used love, understanding and compromise to win the war.
