Overview

Washington Square (Annotated - Includes Essay and Biography) by Henry James

In 1880 Washington Square was published simultaneously in serialized form in both the United States and England. Very quickly it appeared in book form before the end of the year. It is one of James' shorter novels. By the time it was published Henry James was already at work on The Portrait of a Lady and showed no great enthusiasm for Washington Square. He excluded the latter work from his 1908 New York Edition of collected works.

The story is told by an omniscient narrator. The story is well structured and relatively straight forward in its style. It is a tale of a young woman restricted by her class and times, who is dominated by her father.

Read this classic book many years ago, and saw the Broadway play version twive (called "The Heiress"). But book reads as freshly as if it were just written.

One of the worst free book copies - This is what the first sentence looks like. "Ddbing a portion of the lint half of the present century, and more particularly dnr-I ing the latter part of it, there flourished and >>, practised in the city X I of New York a phy-1 I sician who enjoyed I perhaps..." The story is a fast reader. Has a great setting with awesome characters, specially Dr. Sloper. What's best, the ending was unpredictable.

How stubborn can Catherine be about her lover? How adamant can her father be? How annoying can Catherine's scheming aunt, Mrs. Penniman, get? Its a tense situation, but the reader may lose patience, not to mention interest, in the characters after a while. Its a decent book, nonetheless.

This is a great story but this free copy is full of typos and extremely hard to read, with missing letters in words and randomly inserted numbers and punctuation marks. Poor quality.
