I first read this book while in high school, and fell in love with the gothic romance. It fueled my love of reading, and my love of a great mystery/thriller. Through my travels I lost my copy, but several years ago I happened upon it in a flea market book stall, and fell in love with it all over again. Curl up with this wonderful book and find yourself in another time and place. It will never grow old!!

This story is set on the southeast coast of England in the early 1800s when Napolean declared himself emperor of France, and England was at wore with France. There is plenty of intrigue because many Englishmen who lived in this harsh, marshy area smuggled goods from France to make some extra money. This was dangerous business for them--if they were caught, they could be imprisoned or executed as traitors. They didn't like or trust outsiders, and this is the situation that newly arrived Christina Tretton finds herself in. There is more suspense than romance in this story, and if you are looking for passionate sex scenes you won't find them here. Still, it's agood read if you enjoy historical suspense novels.

I am so glad this is finally out in Nook form. I love this Gothic mystery and have read it many times. My current copy is in tatters.

I recently re-read this book and it was just as engaging & exciting as I remembered it. JAH was one of my favorite authors in High School & College, I'm glad to find that her books stand the test of time. The romance is clean but still stirring and the mysteries surrounding both of the main characters kept me glued to the page.

This book was different from what I normally like to read but I really enjoyed it, and now am looking forward to reading more books from this author.

Sweet story enjoyed reading it.

Very disappointed. Cannot recommend. It takes more than a gothic setting and accessories to make a true gothic novel.

This has to be the worse book I have ever read. Bought based on reviews, boring and silly. Don't waste your money or time reading. How anyone could think this was a good book is beyond me awful
