Overview

Annette Smith has been blessed with the ability to observe and find beauty, meaning, and humor in seemingly ordinary situations. Within a sentence or two, readers are captivated by her delightful, descriptive writing style, connected with the characters, and eager to hear more.
Watermelon Days and Firefly Nights is Smith's fifth book of original short stories. In this charming collection, adults of all ages enjoy a behind-the-scenes peek at the lives and loves of a few of the 3,482 folks who proudly call Ella Louise, Texas, their home sweet home. These quirky and loveable characters include twelve-year-old twins whose "creative" pet care is appreciated by neither their mother nor their geriatric poodle, George; Faye Beth and Harvey Newman, a married couple who has lived for seven years with a gaping hole in the roof of their house and have no plans to fix it; and the industrious deacons of Grace Baptist Church, whose decision to paint the sanctuary uncovers a shocking, twenty-year-old secret.
Watermelon Days and Firefly Nights celebrates the simple, small-town goodness of neighbors helping neighbors and friends caring for friends. Through glimpses of ordinary people exhibiting extraordinary love, forgiveness, and humor, readers gain a renewed sense of kinship and love and are reminded of life's sweetest hours.

Near the end of a hectic school year, I picked up Watermelon Days and Firefly Nights and was immediately taken back to my childhood days in East Texas! What a gift of characters and setting Annette Smith gives in this collection of humor and inspiration.

This is a wonderful book. The characters are charming and well-developed, raw, honest, imperfect and real. This book made me laugh out loud and shed tears. There's something for everyone in this collection of short stories, and a reminder to appreciate God's beautiful imperfect children, as this town has somehow managed to do. This book will entice you to think, ponder, feel good, and let go of some baggage, all under the guise of relaxing. I highly recommend it.

I don't usually read books of short stories so I wasn't too excited about reading this, but I really got into it. The stories are all intertwined with all the town people. A lot of the stories made me laugh and/or cry so very emotionally engaging.

I needed something light after reading several dark, thoughtful books, and this was the perfect one. A couple of the stories were so funny! It's a quick read, and you know it's a good book when you recommend it to someone else.

Really wonderful little collection of short stories about the residents of a small town. Though each story is just a few pages long, Annette Smith manages to fully develop the characters and provides plenty of detail. It's a nice, easy read with a lot of feel-good, happy stories with dashes of humor and sadness thrown in to make them all believably human. Loved this book, definitely recommend it!

This is very, very nice book. The short stories are really refreshing, something you can pick up when you have a break, read a nice story, set it down and pick it back up later - just plain easy, nice, sometimes funny stories about small town people's everyday lives.
