Overview

POWER. We all want it, they've got it—witches, warlocks, sorcerers, necromancers, those who peer beneath the veil of mundane reality and put their hands on the levers that move the universe. They see the future in a sheet of glass, summon fantastic beasts, and transform lead into gold...or you into a frog. From Gandalf to Harry Potter, wizardry has never been more exciting and popular. Now acclaimed editor John Joseph Adams brings you thirty-two of the most spellbinding tales ever written, by some of today's most magical talents, including Neil Gaiman, Ursula K. Le Guin, George R.R. Martin, Robert Silverberg, Kelly Link, Nnedi Okorafor, and many more. Enter a world where anything is possible, where imagination becomes reality. Experience the thrill of power, the way of the wizard.

This was a fun read. Anthologies are a special treat for me, because I discover so much. I discovered Laura Anne Gilman from an anthology. I enjoyed the short story so much I soon had the first two or three books of the Retrievers series in my hands. After nine books in two series (Her latest Dragon Justice is out, but I'm a cheapskate, so I'm waiting, of course, if I read correctly it's also her last novel in this particular literary universe, which doesn't make me want to go out and read it in a hurry, either) I haven't been disappointed. Of course, anthologies, like mines aren't always full of the particular payload of you're searching for, but this anthology was light on the dross, in my (not so) humble opinion. I found that there were few stories which did not bring something fresh and new to the table. So whether your idea of a wizard is Gandalf or Harry Potter (neither of which are in this collection, btw) or something completely different look in here you'll find something you like.
