CHAPTER 1

One morning Fred awoke to find his cage being put into a large truck. He was taken with other dogs to a big store where people came and adopted them. Adoption meant the owner would take the pet home and promise to properly care for the pet, play with the pet, and give the pet plenty of love.

Fred was scared. There was so much noise in the store with people walking by, sometimes talking to the dogs. Children wanted to pet the animals, but Fred did not like it. He had been mistreated before. Would he again be hit with a stick or made fun of, or roughly handled?

Just then Kathy walked by. She had been praying for a dog to share her home. She walked past the first two cages. Then there was Fred. "He is the one!" exclaimed Kathy. "Let's spend some time together to see is he likes me."

They went to a small room where Kathy petted Fred and talked to him, then asked, "Do you want to come home with me?" Fred did not understand what was happening. He waited while Kathy reviewed his information sheet and was proudly given his adoption certificate.

The two got into the car and headed home. Kathy talked to him and petted him.

There was plenty of good food, water and treats were waiting in his special jar. she had Fred's bed ready.
