We Get a Kick Out of Jazz Too [Barnes & Noble Exclusive]

The current success of Verve Records can be attributed to a slew of wise moves, including the label's mix of established and new performers as well as its nudging R&B, pop, and blues performers to take on jazz roles. We Get a Kick Out of Jazz Too spotlights Verve's broad view of jazz, with tracks that bring together legendary names and, in some cases, also unite them with contemporary stars from other musical genres. These cross-category collaborations are inspired: Guitarists John Scofield and John Mayer go at it on the Ray Charles chestnut "I Don't Need No Doctor," Chaka Khan hooks up with saxophone giant Joe Henderson on "Summertime," and organ master Jimmy Smith and modern bluesman Taj Mahal merge their talents on "Strut." Unparalleled New Orleans-rooted vocalist Aaron Neville is paired with the brilliant saxophonist Michael Brecker on the timeless "Cry Me a River" and trumpeter Chris Botti joins R&B diva Gladys Knight for "Loverman." Three of Verve's most impressive recent signings -- Diana Krall, the budding diva Lizz Wright, and the British sensation Jamie Cullum -- get their own tracks, each giving evidence that the future of this still enterprising record label is in good hands.

Glad I stumbled upon this. Listened to it in the store and bought 2 copies. (One to give) James Brown's version of "September Song" was a sweet surprise, but each cut is a pleasure.
