Almena Johnstone has certainly lived through her share of hard knocks. People have misused and abused this sweet spirited, country girl since she was knee high to a bumblebee, taking her kindness and innocence as a weakness. After yet another person’s actions have knocked her to her knees, Almena returns to the small rural town where she was raised. Despite her deficits, Almena was blessed to have both a mother and grandmother who saw her abilities and talents and cultivated them. However, sometimes a person’s best efforts are not enough. In her case, small minds permeated the small town where she lived, adding to the difficulties of an already overtaxed life. When tragedy struck yet again, Almena is left on her own, trying to forge a new beginning. But as the saying goes, there’s a silver lining inside every cloud. Her silver lining comes in the form of a new neighbor named, Cora. Cora is a woman with her own demons. The two form a deep friendship that serves as the healing balm both women are desperately in need of. When death came knocking, Cora leaves to Almena the most precious possession she had. Armed with a new fortitude to have a better life, Almena takes the gift and heads north. It is there, in a place where she knows no one and no one knows her that she finds herself for the first time. Weaver is a delicately woven story that pulls a reader in from the first line, entrenches a reader deeper into the story and holds tightly until the very end. Miriam Kelly-Ferguson has presented a novel of truth, richness and beautiful eloquence in her debut. A true wordsmith, Kelly-Ferguson uses her skills to share one woman’s journey to self that left this reader cheering for each victory and waiting with bated breath to see how circumstances would pan out. Kelly-Ferguson is an immensely gifted writer who brings depth of character and plot, as well as elicits varied emotional responses from her reader. On this eve of the new year, I can with resounding honesty say that Weaver is the best book I’ve read all year. Can’t wait to see what’s next for this author. 5 well deserved stars! ____ Reviewed by Tumika Patrice Cain
