When the Peltry Gang swoops into Rileyville, the attack is sudden and merciless. Before the townsfolk know what hit them, one of their own lies dead on the dirt street, Deputy Abner Webb is caught with his pants down, and just for good measure, the desperadoes shoot the sheriff and leave him for dead as they head out.
Webb knows he must capture the outlaws for what they’ve done, but that won’t be easy for the inexperienced lawman. Yet with the help of a shady horse trader and an ornery schoolmaster, Webb just might bring the gunslingers in on their feet—or slungover their saddles.

Great story, as usual. This is a must read for any western fan.
Abner Webb is only the deputy shariff in Rileysville when the Peltry gang show up in town. The Peltry's and their gunmen killed one citizen, stole what ever they wanted in town and even set fire some of buildings. When the sheriff is brought in to town after being shot and left for dead by the gang, it's up to Abner to gather a posse to ride after the Pelty Gang. With the help of Will Summers, a horse trader with a dark past, Sherman Dahl the school master who seems to be full of surprises on the trail and other townsmen, Webb soon has his posse. But town loot is not all the Peltry's steal as they ambush an army patrol and steal the Gatling gun they are guarding. Then there are the Mexican Federales who are also after the Peltry's and the Gatling gun. Moses & Moose Peltry and their gunmen prove to be a salty bunch as they whittle down those on their trail south to their hideout, but not without loosing some of their own men in the gunfights that occur. The exciting conclusion takes place in the sleepy Mexican village of Punta Del Sol. WEBB'S POSSE is another OUTSTANDING & EXCITING book that will keep you reading and turning pages.
I have been a fan of Mr. Cotton's for many years and his series of books are my favorite westerns along with L'Amour and Zane Grey. at first I thought I would be dissapointed when I saw that Webb's Posse is not a part of any series but I was wrong. Webb's Posse is like all Ralph Cotton books it grabs you and won't let go. It feels like you are really riding with a posse on a manhunt. This story is deeper than most westerns in the way it shows each of the posse members and what makes them keep tracking a band of looters who destroyed their town. The story is about men's honor and what they are willing to die for instead of giving up. By the time I finished I felt like I understood each of these people and I still wanted to know more about each one of thembecause they were so real to life. I started off not liking Abner Webb, then I realized he was just a average deputy caught by surprise who had to do whatever it took to do his job without anyone to guide him. It made me wonder what I would do in the same situation. It would make a great movie!!! Another great book by an outstanding author.
