First ever collection of Haakon Jones westerns, December 15, 1999 Reviewer: DAVID B. RILEY from Arizona Aaron B. Larson's Haakon Jones character have been appearing in numerous small press endeavors for several years. Now, for the first time, they all appear together in this hardcover anthology. For those not familiar, these are in the sub genre of the weird western--a crossover of science fiction and horror adventures with the traditional western story. Although this is an anthology of new and previously published material, the stories are so integrated the book actually reads like a novel. The writing is superb. The adventures Haakon Jones and his sidekick, Small Jumper, get into take us from an assasination attempt to kill President Grant with vampire bats to an encounter with time travelers from the third reich. Narrated in the first person by Haakon Jones, we follow his exploits from the leaving thefarm he grew up on in Minnesota throughout the western United States in the late 1800's. He runs across every conceivable menace from the walking dead to Bigfoot, and even manages to get caught up in a few gunfights along the way. Lovers of speculative fiction should really enjoy this book. For fans of weird westerns, this is a must read.
