The Starting Line

Deep within the heart and soul of every man, woman, boy, and girl is the longing to know and to experience what lies beyond us. People have traversed many an avenue in search of eternal life and the fountain of youth. We desire so strongly to get back to the garden of Eden where everything is perfect. Heaven may seem like a myth or a fairy tale, yet it is absolutely and positively within our reach. The author of earthly life and the author of eternal life is a person. He is not a creed or a concept or a list of rules to obey. He longs to fellowship and commune with the people He has created.

The cry of the heart of mankind has not changed since the beginning of time. As human beings, we long for security and stability, and for freedom from every form of oppression. Religion does not offer the remedy for the aching heart. Neither does politics. Fame and fortune, although adequate in providing some creature comforts, cannot satisfy the soul. Education and vast amounts of knowledge may swell the brain but leave the soul of mankind untouched. No matter what avenue of life one may navigate, there seems to be no lack of dead-end streets.

In this world, heartache, pain, and loss constitute an all too real reality for far too many.

Is there hope and help for us, both now and in the future?

Yes! Yes! One thousand times, yes!

It is for this very reason I felt compelled to write this book. Believe me when I tell you, I have worked vigorously to ready this work for print. You will find that this volume of writings is chock-full of stories, quotes, and poetry, compiled to encourage you, inspire you, and lift your heart.

Be comforted, dear friend.

It is well in the here and now!

It is well in the great beyond.

And it is well beyond the lines.


The trial was severe that came my way.

So I kept on my knees all that day.

the Lord is my Shepherd so I was kept!

The Promise Kept

Not only does God keep His promises, but He also keeps His promised ones.

Psalm 121:7

The Nativity

The humility

God Never Fails

Old-Fashioned Truth

Just because some truths in God's Word are difficult to comprehend and accept does not mean they are fraudulent. The Word of the Lord brings salvation, comfort, and guidance. And to those who claim that the Bible is old-fashioned, I reply, "So is walking."

Lamentations 3:22–24

Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, "The Lord is my portion; therefore, I will wait for him."


How is it conceivable
that a virgin could conceive?

How is it believable
that Mary should believe?

How is it explainable
that God became a man?

How is Christ obtainable?

Ye must be born again.

Matthew 1:22–23

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us").

Fountain of Life

In the storm,
or on the mountain,
high or low,
God is my fountain!

Fountain of life!

Help me be done with lesser things!

God Cannot Be

Wind and Waves

The King of my life

Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. Coming Once

The Promise

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times" (Micah 5:2).

The Wait

"For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it" (Matthew 13:17).

The Fulfillment

"But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman" (Galatians 4:4).

And Coming Again

The Promise

"For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first" (1 Thessalonians 4:16).

"For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. Sing Praises

It's a wonderful thing

Tough Love

She decided to show him some tough love,
for he had deliberately broken a rule.
So, with firm love and gentle tenderness,
she told him to walk home from school.

This was no effortless journey,
for they lived quite a way from town.
By the time he had trudged those twenty miles,
that young man had come around.

He quietly crawled into the kitchen,
crying, "Mom, I'm sorry, I was wrong.
As I sauntered those lone twenty miles,
I wrote down the words to this song."

So impossible to calculate the love of a mother.
It seems to mirror the God above.
Sometimes she showers me with mercy and grace,
and other times she shows me tough love.

I'm Okay, You're Okay, If

But do not think
it was always this way.

I once was lost,
but, happy day,
the debt I owed,
the Lord did pay.

He made a way!

Let me attempt,
if I may,

that awesome day!

made its way
into my heart.

He died for you

One Whole Piece

changing my heart

2 Corinthians 3:18

Oil Spill

Tragedy in the gulf.
Crude oil blanketed there.
A catastrophe worse than that?
No anointing here.

Clay Pots

On occasion, I overestimate my importance.
Walking with a high-minded strut.
So the Lord has to tell me, once again,
exactly what is what.

Even though my thoughts may tell me
I am such a big shot,
with love, my heavenly Father reminds me
I am simply a simple clay pot.

A vessel to hold the beauty.
Claiming none for myself.
Contented to give all the glory to God.
Even if it means sitting on the shelf.

2 Corinthians 4:7

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

Captive No More

Return the joy.
Return the peace.
From my prison,
grant me release.

Let bondage go.
Deliverance flow.
Because of not what,
but Whom, I know.

Your Word declares
You set the captives free.
I claim Your promise
from You to me.

Isaiah 61:1

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.

Fear Not

Energy spent on what might happen.
Fears and doubts the soul will dampen.

So we'll lift our eyes
to the skies.
May heaven help us realize:

He who never sleeps or slumbers
always hears our cries.

So why should I worry or fret?

Prayer Time

In the midst of ease,
he stayed off his knees.
But when the trial came,
he prayed and prayed again.

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.


The old, hollow barn
took in the sun
early that Easter morn.

And from each opening,
crevice, and crack,
the light of the Son shone.

May I like that
old barn be.

This my prayer:
Lord, shine through me.

I have joy
because Jesus has me.

Dad Durost

Arnold Durost and I first met in the early seventies at the Full Gospel Assembly Church in Presque Isle, Maine. I took an instant liking to him, for he was truly a man of God, while I was but a youth in Christ. At some point shortly thereafter, I adopted him as my dad, and he loved me like a son. His quiet spirit and his deep love of God and family schooled me. I dearly love this servant of God.

I just happened to visit a dentist's office with a family member and came across the book among others. While skimming through some of the poems I could feel the compassion, inspiration and genuine love of The Lord and that of what he has been blessed with to share with the world pouring out in the words on the pages.I was so moved by the poem on the back cover 'Where' God?' (seen above) along with a few others like 'The City of Fear, with its Mayor called Anxiety and the citizens called doubt and worry'' that I couldn't help but to remark to the very nice lady in the office that somehow I find it hard to believe that anyone can walk into that office and not take something valuable with them after spending just a few minutes looking through this book.Great book, truly inspiring, I would definitely recommend it, thank you Sir, for sharing your gift with the world.
