I'm an avid reader and this is the most enjoyable and entertaining book I've come across in the last six months. For me, three things stood out, the quality of the writing, the realness of the characters and the authenticity of the settings. The writing flowed so effortlessly it was a joy, and that degree of fluency is a rare skill nowadays. It was mature and compassionate, too, and with many moments of irony in the lines and between them. Every character was real, no cardboard cut-outs but flesh and blood people warts 'n' all and they acted and spoke like real people do. This author has excellent eyes and ears. I spent several years in the Middle East working on various projects and all the settings were familiar to me and totally authentic, and the people and episodes described were just right. I knew and worked with men like The Platypus, Clive Heath and the DGM and Flanagan brought them all to life again for me. And some of the episodes were hilarious, Ned O'Brien's presentation of credentials to The Platypus was a great laugh, the Vicar of Ahmadi's Christmas dinner was a real coup and when I came across the pompous Herbert, perfectly characterised in a few paragraphs,I was sure he was a former colleague of mine! It's only been a week since I finished this book but already I'm going back and dipping into it again to re-live certain events and to enjoy the wonderful writing. As I said at the top, a great read and a memorable one. Top marks!

I wanted this book to go on and on. I missed it so much on completion. The author writes with immediacy and, above all, beautifully. His characters are so real I still wonder how some might have fared post-desert. There is humour, there are moving observations, history unfolds and the desert enters the reader's soul. I hope there will be many other works from this amazing writer.
