About the Author
Paul's dyslexia seemed to slam the door shut on most of the jobs he was interested in. Fortunately, he attended an assessment course and found that a career in dental laboratory technology could be a great match for him. He managed to get into lab school where the lab work proved to be amazingly easy, but his struggles with reading and writing still made lab school very challenging. However, by 1980 Paulovercame some of those hurdles and opened his own dental laboratory. Managing his own business was difficult, but then Paulmet Karen, the girl who would change his life and help his dental lab grow from just himself to 30 employees. When Karen discovered Paul's difficulty with reading she offered to help him learn. They started from scratch, and at age 23 Paul began reading to her from illustrated children's books. After they married, Karen continued to encourage Paul to read, and despite being occasionally frustrated, he began to improve and enjoy it. He realized how much he had missed by not reading earlier in his life. With the birth of their first child, Paul made a promise to himself that he would read to his children often, and that he would encourage them in every way to become avid readers.
Paul scribbled down the rough draft for his first book almost 15 years ago. It started with a simple question the night before he was leaving on a canoe trip. “What do you need to go camping?” he asked his children, and they responded with everything imaginable, even the piano. After returning home from his trip, the first thing Paul's kids wanted to play was the “What do you need?” game. It soon turned into a family tradition that grew into the “What Do You Need?” books.
Paul lives with his family in southern Minnesota where he and his wife still own and operate a successful dental laboratory. In his spare time Paul enjoys the outdoors and writes children's books. His two children are both in college, and they are both voracious readers.
