What Happens Next by Colleen Clayton

How can you talk about something that you can't remember?

Before the ski trip, Cassidy "Sid" Murphy was a cheerleader (on the bottom of the pyramid, but still...) and a straight-A student, with two of the best friends a girl could ask for.

When Sid finds herself on a ski lift with hunky local college guy, Dax Windsor, she's thrilled. "Come to a party with me," he tells her, but Dax isn't what he seems. He takes everything from Sid-including a lock of her perfect red curls—and she can't remember any of it.

After the ski trip, Sid is an insomniac and an obsessive late-night runner, unable to relate to her old friends.

Caught in a downward spiral, Sid drops her college prep classes and takes up residence in the A/V room with only Corey "The Living Stoner" Livingston for company. But as she gets to know Corey—slacker, baker, total dreamboat—Sid finds someone who truly makes her happy. Now, if only she could shake the nightmares, everything would be perfect...

Witty and poignant, Colleen Clayton's debut is a stunning story of moving on after the unthinkable happens

For a book to physically pain me, is nearly impossible. I don't know how Colleen Clayton managed to do that, but she did. While reading "What Happens Next", there were moments where I felt pain right in the middle of my heart, but there were also parts where I felt like my own body was feeling the pain. To read about such a sensitive topic as this, was hard. I've had a very close friend who experienced something like this, and I know it's also happened to so many girls out there. For me, I honestly enjoy reading realistic fiction, because it gets you to read about tough, life situations. Even though it was a bit painful to read about this book considering many girls went through the exact same thing, I'm still glad I did. What Happens Next made me learn things that I never actually knew, and it did open my eyes to a lot of things. The main protagonist, Cassidy, also known as Sid, goes to a Ski trip with her school. Sid has always been a normal teenager. A straight A-student, a member of the cheerleading squad, and having her two best friends. Sid also always felt a bit unconfident about her looks. Thinking that just because she's got those extra curves, or those extra pounds, and that flashing red hair, that she's ugly and no boy would ever be interested in her. Therefore, in her Ski trip, she meets one handsome guy who actually seems to have an interest in her! The problem is that, Sid doesn't mind that he's a "few" years older, and when he invites her to a so-called party, she actually sneaks out and meets up with him. I was literally smacking my ipad screaming "NO NO WHAT ARE YOU DOING? ARE YOU CRAY CRAY?" That's like the first rule our parents teach us. NEVER go ANYWHERE with strangers! I just kept thinking, is she stupid? or is she that naive to actually just go to an address some stranger wrote for you on a paper? Anyhow, the damage is done, and things just get nasty. After the incident, Sid really just broke my heart. Her situation was crazy. She lots her friends, and her social life practically got flushed down the toilet. Except for some students who thought her sneak out was cool. When Sid decides to help in the A/V room, she meets Corey, who is also known as "The Living Stoner" at her school. One thing that was weird, was that he wasn't hot!! Not like one of those dreamy bad boys we always read about in YA novels. I'm not sure if the fangirl in me really enjoyed that, but it was a different taste! I also liked how Corey really helped Sid through the difficulties she was facing, and boy, were those some difficulties. Like I said, Sid BROKE MY HEART! She was going through so much pain, and to keep that all inside, I know it must have torn her apart. She did crazy things, and was mentally and physically affected by what happened. I just wanted to kill her (again) for not confiding in anyone about what happened! Anyhow, I really loved the ending, and was really glad that things were starting to get better and better for her. It really pains me to know that girls are suffering from what Sid also suffered, and I really just want all of them to never give up, and not let what happened eat up all of their future and their dreams. I truly recommend What Happens Next to every young adult reader, especially the girls out there.

Sixteen year old Sid Murphy learns that tragedy can strike anywhere and to anyone. On a ski trip with her high school, Sid decides to step outside of her circle of amazing friends, cheerleading and good grades for a night on the wild side. The last day of the trip she finds herself waking up in a strange room with no idea what happened the night before. Colleen Clayton highlights the consequences of Sid's decisions and focuses on the aftermath that brings Sid a greater sense of self. What Happens Next is poignant and deeply touching. The growth the readers will see as Sid explores who she is after the ski trip is a precious blossoming, one that deserves reader sympathy. Clayton reaches far into the dark recesses of the teen mind to bring us a realistic story of survival and acceptance. It's amazing how many frequent teen worries Clayton writes about while keeping the focus solidly on Sid's downward spiral. Sid's relationship with her two best friends, Paige and Kirsten, falls apart and leaves Sid feeling confused and lonely. As other aspects of her life continue to unravel, Sid starts running every night and watching her weight like a hawk. The aspects of her image that she's always struggled to embrace, curly red hair and curvy hourglass figure, become hideous reminders of that night she can't remember. Switching from web page development class to AV brings Sid some amount of stress relief. It's there that she meets Corey Livingston, "the Living Stoner", and thus Sid realizes that she can move on from the nightmare that has befallen her. Corey becomes an essential part of the plot, with his own secrets and strong connection to Sid. He's the light that keeps Sid from drowning in her own dark desire to purge food and over-exercise. Their romance is undeniably sweet and lightens up the novel's serious tone, also keeping it from crossing the line to depressing or hopeless. What Happens Next is a debut novel to read and will forge an unshakable faith in Colleen Clayton's ability to relate to the teen audience and beyond! *Copy of book provided via publisher in exchange for an honest review*

I’ve been super eager to read this book for a while now. If you check out exactly how long it was on my TBR pile before I finally found a copy, you’ll know what I mean. I went into the story having a pretty good idea of what the instigating event would be, and I wasn’t surprised to be right. What did surprise me was exactly how creepy I ended up finding the character of Dax–especially after the truth about him comes out. The horribleness of what he does to Sid and the ways it impacts her are a big part of the reason why I read this story so fast. While the events of the ski trip are damaging to Sid, I found it enjoyable and significantly more realistic that she didn’t spend every second dwelling on it. The more her relationships with the secondary characters–Corey, her friends, and some of the others she encounters–shift and change, the less time she spends brooding. And yet, the worse she feels when everything comes bouncing back. That made a lot of sense to me–it wouldn’t have been as realistic if she spent every second of the next year or so hating her life. The romance was believable and adorable. And how awesome was it to see a male love interest who doesn’t fall into the stereotypical body type standards of beauty exactly at the time that Sid is having issues with the same thing herself. If the author chose those details on purpose, that was masterfully done. Sid’s supportive, strong family was also a relief. The love she felt for them, and they for her, so often goes understated in YA contemporary. My only issue with the book is that I wish the ending had been more developed. I wanted to know how Sid managed to resolve her issues with her Mom and Corey, as well as how a few other things turned out that featured as minor plot points. Then again, all of those issues might have stemmed from my desire to stay immersed in the story a little longer. A good, compelling read all the way around. I’ll be on the lookout for Clayton’s next novel.

I would have gave it five stars if it was a little longer, but otherwise it was a fantastic book.

The are some books that leave a mark on you. Those are usually the messy stories. What Happens Next is exactly that kind of YA book. It's messy because it the characters are put in difficult situations where they ask hard questions. It's a book that challenges the readers preconceived notions of what we believe and we value. Colleen Clayton's debut novel is the kind that turned me upside down and inside out. Reasons to Read: 1. How to deal with consequences: Sid is young. She's young and she's growing up. And she makes some choices. Those choices lead to heartbreak and pain beyond compare. There are a lot of books out there that have characters who go through incredibly trying circumstances, so this isn't new. But what is different here is that Sid is absolutely determined to fight her way through this. Importantly this a story where the characters learn not only to face consequences (fair or unfair) but how to deal with them which just isn't addressed nearly enough. 2. Another look at sexual assault: I'm grateful that more authors and readers are engaging in discussions on sexual assault. Our perception of sexual assault has changed drastically in recent decades. I believe that's a good thing. And I'm also thankful to have books like What Happens Next that explores the story of a girl who, in retrospect, made a poor choice and was deeply harmed. Sid has to wonder if she's to blame for what happened to her (which is tragic, truly). Sid also struggles with how to work out the pain of an event that she doesn't even remember, a different kind of pain altogether. 3. An uplifting story: Sid's story isn't picture perfect, Colleen keeps it realistic for her readers. Sid's story, however, is inspiring and an encouragement to all of us. The story of a girl who triumphs over the harm done to her and struggles with herself is beautiful. It's remarkable, just like every individual who is ever sexually assaulted and comes through it. And the relationship development is so lovely and sweet!  There are definitely a number of issues and problems that this book brings up and deals with; it can be overwhelming at times. There's a lot going on here for one little book, and there's just so much to say about these various issues (rape, eating disorders, self-esteem, bullying, drugs, etc).  ARC received from HBG Canada for review; no other compensation was received.

Im not a huge 'teen fiction' reader, but I really enjoyed this book. It was one of those stories that you couldn't put down and were sad to see end. I am keeping my fingerd crossed for a second installment. Absolutely purchase this book- you won't regret it!

Who is Sid Murphy? She's any one of us, that's who she is. There are always choices to make and times when we're in control or out of control and every decision has a consequence whether a good or bad outcome prevails. When teenage Sid meets a handsome stranger on a ski lift during a school field trip and he tells her all the things she's been dying to hear, of course he gains her attention and trust. What Happens Next is unthinkable and changes the course of her life. But it's What Happens Next in Sid's life with her friends, her family and then with meeting Cory that will keep you glued to her story. Colleen Clayton writes in a witty, sarcastic but endearing style that pulls you in and makes you want to be involved with these characters and their stories. You will laugh, cry, scream and want to know even more as each page flips! Now I have to just wait on pins & needles for Clayton's next smash novel!!!
