Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-These brief, pictorial treatments attempt to show the gradations of expression associated with confusion, sadness, and fear. Simple sentences such as, "My eyes get big when I am scared," are accompanied by a full-page color photograph of various children demonstrating big eyes or furrowed brows-whatever trait the text specifies. The point that different people express emotions differently is certainly made, but some of the pictures could easily express any emotion or no emotion, and so may do more to confound than to clarify. A bilingual index listing between six to eight terms shares space with a pictorial dictionary, showing fragments of some of the photos labeled with facial features (mouth, eyelash, etc.). The texts are bland and unexciting. Saxton Freymann's Vegetal Como Eres (Scholastic, 2001) is cleverly illustrated and allows for the exercise of imagination and the discussion of emotions. Children's Literature - Naomi Butler
Randolph portrays different children's faces and what they look like when they are sad. This book in the "Let's Look at Feelings" series, offers the biggest variety of expressions. Since it is sometimes difficult to read face and body language, whether in a child or adult, this interesting book may help readers understand when a person is sad. Adults will also gain an understanding about themselves and be much more sensitive to people around them, as well as the children with whom they read the book. The Web site that complements this book will extend the information to educate parents and caregivers. This book and others in the series are appropriate for children's public and school libraries , but social agencies and other related groups could also benefit from the information presented here.
