What If by Rebecca Donovan

A new novel by the USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Breathing Series . . .

What if you had a second chance to meet someone for the first time?
Cal Logan is shocked to see Nicole Bentley sitting across from him at a coffee shop thousands of miles from their hometown. After all, no one has seen or heard from her since they graduated over a year ago.

Except this girl isn't Nicole.

She looks exactly like Cal's shy childhood crush, but her name is Nyelle Preston and she has no idea who he is. This girl is impulsive and daring, her passion for life infectious. The complete opposite of Nicole. Cal finds himself utterly fascinated-and falling hard. But Nyelle is also extremely secretive. And the closer he comes to finding out what she's hiding, the less he wants to know.

When the secrets from the past and present collide, one thing becomes clear: Nothing is what it seems.

NEW BONUS epilogue, author interview, book club guide and more.

Rebecca Donovan is such an amazingly talented writer. She grabs you from the first words she writes in a story, and just doesn't let you go. You have to keep reading just to know what will happen to the characters. This book was just beautiful and heartbreaking. I fell in love with Cal and needed to know everything I could about Nyelle. This is a beautiful story about second chances, and how you can make the most of them. I was confused and intrigued, but in the end, it all made sense. Thank you RD, you certainly did not disappoint.

I fell in love with Rebecca Donovan's writing when i read The Breathing Series, so i had very high expectations that may have not been completely fair (The Breathing Series are my all-time favorite books). Although she didnt disappoint with What If, the whole time i kind of felt like something was misssing. I was just waiting for the writing i fell in love with to shine through, but it never quite showed up. Dont get me wrong, i really enjoyed this book. But knowing her writing and reading her books over and over again, i expected more. Also. I felt like the ending was rushed. Or maybe i just wanted more. Overall, it was a fun, cute, easy read.

What If is a beautifully written story that had me pondering all of my life's 'what ifs'. There are just too many to count. This book opened my eyes to see that some 'what ifs' are possible. There is room for do-overs. But it also helped me see that some thing are just meant to be. The story is written from present to past. In the past, we learn of inseparable friendships between Cal, Nicole, Rae, and Richelle. Their friendships brought warmth to my heart and made me wish I was a kids again. They had a unique connection that would last a lifetime, or so they thought. Which brings us to the present. Who is Nyelle? Who is this care free girl that looks just Nicole? The best friend who seemed to have turned her back to those who cared deeply for her all those years ago. These are the questions that Cal and Rae have. Rae wants answers, but as Cal gets to know Nyelle, and falls for her, he doesn't necessarily want the answers. He just wants her. But the answers and truth always have a way of unraveling.

I forced myself to pace this book. I have a REALLY bad habit of devouring Rebecca’s books and then in the blink of an eye I’m done – and regretting not savoring it more… So over the long Labor Day weekend I started on this story that would undoubtedly make me feel….. laugh and cry…. and laugh some more. I adore the nostalgia of this book….. because there’s nothing more real than the friendships you have when you’re young…. and as this story unfolds between different narrators and at different times in their lives… and as always, Rebecca flawlessly brings us through their lives… the ups and downs and making us question everything throughout the book…. it was a beautiful journey to be a part of and a story that will not leave me anytime soon… Cal is in college – away from home, starting a life for himself when he meets Nyelle – a girl that reminds him very much of an old friend back home…. a girl he had been very close with at one point, but due to the things life throws at us… they grew apart. He can’t shake the feeling he has when he’s around her, and as these two grow closer – the hilarity that is Nyelle takes them on adventure after adventure – whether it’s just climbing a tree – or making snow angels…. the girl is all about living in the moment…. The books title says it all – the book is full of questions ….. questions about the past, questions about the future…. and questions popping up all over in the present… What If…. What If…. What If….Because who doesn’t question things in their lives? Who doesn’t ever wonder what if I hadn’t done this – or what if things hadn’t worked out the way they did? I can think of 20 right off the top of my head right now – what if. And that is the beauty of this story. Rebecca Donovan has taken something that everyone in the world experiences and illustrated it flawlessly with these characters. You will want to climb trees, make snow angels and keep your childhood friends a little closer.

I absolutely loved Ms. Donovan’s BREATHING series and was excited to read something else that she wrote. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with WHAT IF. I have this drive to finish every book I pickup otherwise this would’ve been a DNF. My first struggle was with the audio version. The book is told 98% from Cal’s POV yet the narrator is female. Sometimes the flashbacks pop up in the middle of a scene with no warning and it would take we awhile to figure out what was going on. I cannot believe that it took over 80% of the book to not only question Nyelle about this new persona but to also reveal the motivation behind it. I am not unsympathetic to the reason why, but I just didn’t feel any connection to it or any of the characters. Finally, we have the epilogue…blah! I liked the idea of his and her epilogues, but these missed the mark. All they did was rehash the scene that just played out with very little new material. This is a pass.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I was confused at first on what was going on, but figured it all out toward the end. I also wasn't sure about the flashbacks, but it you really get a better understanding of the characters.

So well written, above and beyond the typical young adult love story. Really had me guessing until the end. An excellent read!

Only purchased this book because it was a chosen read from one of the members in my Book Club. Was not impressed with the book and doubt if I would purchase another book by this author.

Received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. WHAT IF is a highly entertaining mystery/romance. It's a bit predictable at times--I figured out the big mystery pretty early on. But it didn't ruin the read for me. It was kind of fun to see Rebecca Donovan laying breadcrumbs for the reader to follow. The characters were relatable and the mystery was engaging to the end. The perfect quick & easy beach read! Check it out.

Reviewed by Heather Book provided by NetGalley for review Review originally posted at Romancing the Book This is one of the best books I have read in a while. I couldn’t put it down until I found out the answer to my main question, “Why?”. Just like Cal, I couldn’t wait until Nyelle was mentioned again. For many people, Nyelle will be a very relatable character. I knew people like her growing up and several of them have her personality today. She is by far my favorite character in this book. I fell in love with her personality and her kind heart. Poor Cal can’t figure out why he is so obsessed with her. He swears that she is his childhood crush. When secrets are exposed, the truth comes out and it won’t be what you expect. At first, the flipping from past to present every other chapter was aggravating to me. When I read further into the book though, I realized there was really no other way to organize the chapters. It made the story more powerful by not knowing the history of the characters first. The whole story kept me intrigued and wanting to know more. Also, I’m really glad that the main character, Cal, was the one telling this story. Throughout the book, you see the other characters as children and see how they thought and felt but you never see their current ones. It really added to the story. My heart broke for the characters, every single one of them. I was left crying my eyes out at the end. What If will leave you valuing your friends and family more than you already do. The ending was not what I expected at all. I can’t wait to re-read it because I feel like knowing how it ends will completely change the story. It is a very emotional story filled with love, friendship, mystery and a few laughs. Favorite Quote: “Then… let the stars take it away and make everything better. And when the sun comes up, and those stars disappear, they take all the hurt with them.”
