I am a BIG fan of the entire Etan Boritzer "What Is" book series, in which he discusses very real and tender  subjects in a conversational way, to help children (of all ages) develop character and discuss difficult topics. One of my favorites is "What is a Family", as Etan describes all kinds of families, including non-human families,  like animals, fish and even bugs! This is such an important aspect, that all living creatures on Earth share love, share family, share community.   And as a single mom of 5 kids, I am greatly moved by Etan's description of divorce, and how it is not the child's  fault, that it is an adult thing.  This is a big issue for kids and divorce. Also, of course, there are families with two men, or two women, or one parent that adopts, etc. Etan is so comprehensive & so embracing of all in his writing style, yet, is able to put it in such simplistic,  easy-to-digest terms. I highly recommend this book, and all of his books, for character education for the child who is trying to make  sense of an increasingly complicated world. Thank you, Etan!

Our family loves Etan Boritzer’s whole series of 12 ‘What is?’ books so this latest book of his is really valued by us too. This book can be seen as a gift to parents, teachers, and child-life professionals as much as it is to children. Great illustrations by Jeff Vernon too! With Etan’s wonderful sensitivity and sense of celebration, the book describes the full spectrum that today encompasses the word “family.”  Etan also approaches the complexities of adult relationships within families in remarkably skilled language so that a child’s mind and heart can respond to the concepts described with confidence and trust.  Our kids also appreciate in this book Etan’s inclusiveness of animal, plant and even cloud companions (!) as family and gifts of nature with whom we share our planet. Wonderful uplifting and educational read!

Reviewed by Kristie Ingerto for Readers Favorite "What is Family?" written by Etan Boritzer and illustrated by Jeff Vernon is a book filled with questions and explanations for children. It also provides a basis for a discussion. Each and every person is different and each family is different. This book discusses how families vary from other families, such as how the family is created, what individuals make up the family unit and how the individuals in a family get along with each other. Interspersed throughout the book are questions and definitions that will help lead to further discussions about one's own family and other families a person has contact with. What is great about this book is that it addresses every type of family as regards how the family is formed and it also addresses the family dynamics. This is so important because some children may think that they are not normal as they have a family different from that of their peers. This book is sure to help and reassure them. The point that seemed to stand out the most is that no family is perfect; this is important for children to know as they may compare their own families to other families and may believe that another family is perfect and that their family could be if something was different about it. Overall, this book is an excellent resource to be used with children and would be a great resource to use to start off a counseling unit focusing on families as it uses child-friendly terms and descriptions.
