When I think of all the negative images on television, music videos and video games children are exposed to daily, the book "What Makes Me Beautiful?" hits me like a breath of fresh air. Finally, there is a book on the market reiterating a lesson that I as a parent share often. Real beauty lies in who you are and what you do, not what you look like, and what you wear. The opening lines say, "Mom says I'm beautiful because I'm thoughtful. I think of ways to make others happy. Dad says I'm beautiful because I'm smart. I Love to ask questions and learn new things". In this book being honest is beautiful. It reflects on a host of beautiful things the character in the book does. It also invites dialog at the end of the story when it asks, "What are some of the things you do that make you beautiful?"I also love that the main character is a boy because it helps the reader focus on the fact that he is a beautiful human being! I won't ruin the story by telling you all the other character traits of beauty. But I will tell you that when you buy "What Makes Me Beautiful" for a child, you can be confident they will not only be entertained; they will also be enriched by a whole new concept of beauty that is attainable by everyone willing to work on being better people. I recommend this book for every child. It is an iconic story that will be as relevant in a hundred years as it is today.
